Launched in 1993, Jet Airways was among the early private airlines in the Indian market. The company was incorporated as Jet Airways (India) Limited (JAIL) in 1992 and started operations as an air taxi operator. It received scheduled airline status in 1995 and a year later it became a deemed public company in 1996. Jet Airways is engaged in scheduled air transportation which includes carriage of passengers cargo and provision of related allied services. Jet Airways was reconverted into a private company in 2001 before becoming a public company in 2004.
The company underwent a corporate insolvency resolution process in April 2019. After multiple rounds of bidding, the Jalan-Kalrock consortium became the resolution applicant for Jet Airways in June 2021, giving the airline a new lease of life and making way for its revival.
Business operations
Jet Airways launched its first inter-continental service linking Mumbai and London by direct daily flights in 2005. During FY 2006, the company completed the construction of a hangar complex with a workshop and allied facilities in Mumbai. The same year, it signed a special code sharing (SPA) agreement with American Airlines for India and US flights. Jet Airways introduced its second flight on the Mumbai-London route followed by another direct flight on the Amritsar-London route.
In 2007, the company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Lufthansa Technik AG Germany for A330/B777 component works personnel assignment services and maintenance management services
Jet Airways launched a flight service between Chennai and Toronto via its hub in Brussels. The airline was listed as a frequent flyer programme partner of Brussels Airlines. Jet Airways teamed up with Etihad Airways under a codeshare agreement and reciprocal frequent flier partnership in the New Delhi-Mumbai-Abu Dhabi sectors in 2008. The airline launched its daily flight on the Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco route to become the first private Indian carrier to operate in China. Jet Airways got permission to fly to Dubai from Delhi and Mumbai in the same year.
The company launched international flights from Bengaluru to Singapore and Colombo offering connectivity in ASEAN and SAARC regions in 2017, The company also expanded its services to Okinawa in Japan, Darwin in Australia, and Auckland in New Zealand during the year.
Jet Airways' partnerships with Delta Air Lines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Air France and Virgin Atlantic were further strengthened by expanding connectivity via its European gateways to cover 34 points in North America and 46 points in Europe.
As part of its expansion efforts, Jet Airways increased its capacity between emerging cities, starting non-stop flights from Indore and Ahmedabad. The company also added services from Jaipur, Silchar and Dehradun.
In FY 2018, the airline signed a memorandum of understanding with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Air France on strategic cargo cooperation.
Jet Airways flew 124 narrow-body and wide-body aircraft on nearly 1,000 domestic and international routes before it suspended operations in April 2019.
Jet Airways' market capitalisation stood at over ₹650 crore as of December 30, 2023. Jet Airways share price has slipped by nearly 50% in the last three years.
