JSW Steel

JSW Steel operates within the JSW Group, engaging in diversified sectors such as energy, infrastructure and cement. The JSW Group boasts a substantial $23 billion in revenue across crucial sectors.

In 1982, the JSW group ventured into the steel industry by acquiring Piramal Steel Limited, setting the foundation for JSW Steel's emergence. This initial move led to the formation of Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Limited (JVSL) in 1994. This strategic step expanded production capacity and solidified JSW's position in the Indian steel market.

A pivotal moment unfolded in 2005 when JISCO and JVSL merged, giving rise to JSW Steel Limited. This consolidation brought the entire Jindal Steel legacy under a unified entity.

On March 25, 2005, it became a listed public company on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE.

JSW Steel is India's foremost integrated steel producer, with an annual production capacity exceeding 18 million tonnes. The market capitalisation of JSW Steel is close to ₹200,000 crore as of February 1st, 2024. JSW Steel share price has gained over 110% in three years.

Business operations

JSW Steel specialises in the manufacturing and distribution of iron and steel products. It has diverse steel production facilities at Vijayanagar in Karnataka, Dolvi in Maharashtra and Salem in Tamil Nadu. It secures its raw material base with ownership of 13 captive iron ore mines, positioning itself as a stalwart in the global steel market.

JSW Steel has a crude steel capacity of 27.7 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), inclusive of Bhushan Power and Steel Limited (BPSL) and JSW Ispat Special Products Limited. Its domestic downstream steel capacity is approximately 13.5 MTPA, including entities like JSW Coated Products and the Vijayanagar CRM Complex.

The company operates across over 100 countries. It has a formidable presence in the USA where it maintains a capacity of 1.5 MNTPA through JSW Steel USA. In FY23, it added 394 new branded stores.

To maintain a leading position in technological advancement, JSW has forged a technological collaboration with JFE Steel Corp, Japan, focusing on producing high-strength and advanced high-strength steel for the automotive sector. A joint venture with Marubeni-Itochu Steel Inc. Tokyo has also been established to create cutting-edge steel processing centres.

Further expanding its global presence, JSW Steel acquired a pipe and plate-making steel mill in Baytown in the US state of Texas. JSW Steel aims to achieve an annual steel production of 40 million tons by the end of the next decade.

JSW Steel recorded a 12 per cent year-on-year surge in crude steel production during the third quarter of FY24. The company achieved a production milestone of 6.87 million tonnes, reflecting an 8 per cent increase from the preceding quarter, primarily fueled by heightened demand stemming from increased infrastructure projects.
