NHPC Share Price

NHPC Ltd is a mini-ratna PSU which undertakes all the activities from conceptualisation to commissioning of hydro projects across the country. NHPC was listed on NSE and BSE in 2009.

Founded in 1975, NHPC has a presence in 14 states and two Union Territories. Over the years, it has also diversified into solar and wind energy production.

NHPC is also involved in other operations including power trading, contracts, project management and consultancy.

NHPC’s total installed capacity, as of September 30, 2023, is 7097.20 MW including 1546 MW in joint ventures. This comprises 6971.20 MW from 22 hydropower stations, 76 MW from two solar power projects and 50 MW from a wind power project.

NHPC's hydropower share of 6971.20 MW comes to about 14.88% of the country’s total installed hydropower capacity of 46850.18 MW.

NHPC, including its JVs and subsidiaries, is presently engaged in the construction of 15 projects aggregating to a total installed capacity of 10449 MW. These projects include three hydroelectric projects – Subansiri Lower HEP (2000 MW) and Dibang Multipurpose Project (2880 MW) in Arunachal Pradesh and Parbati-II HEP (800 MW) in Himachal Pradesh.

It has three solar projects totalling 1000 MW being undertaken under MNRE, CPSU scheme in Gujarat (600 MW), Rajasthan (300 MW) and Andhra Pradesh (100MW).

NHPC has 7071 MW installed capacity (6971 MW hydropower and 100 MW renewable energy) through 24 power stations. The company has 15% share of installed hydro-electric capacity in India (6,971 MW out of 46,850 MW).

The PSU had a market capitalisation of over ₹62,000 crore as of December 12, 2023. NHPC share price has appreciated nearly 180% in the last three years.

Business segments of NHPC

The company’s major revenue sources include rental income, income from solar and wind power projects. NHPC manages its operations through four major business verticals including electricity generation, trading of power and project management.

NHPC generates and supplies electricity to various utilities and consumers from its hydropower plants. The sale of electricity to both public and private sector customers through power purchase agreements (PPAs) is a major contributor to the company’s total revenue.

The company is engaged in trading of electricity in power exchange markets to generate additional revenue from fluctuations in power prices in the market.

NHPC is also a leading player in project management and consultancy in the power sector. The company offers project construction and maintenance services for power projects to different clients.

The rental income, from its properties as well as solar and wind power projects, also contribute to its total annual revenue.

Financial highlights

NHPC reported 24,907 million units of total cumulative power generation across its all power stations in the financial year 2022-23. It marked the company’s highest ever annual power generation.

Revenue from operations increased 12.2% to ₹9,316.34 crore in FY23 as against ₹8,309.22 crore in FY22. Total expenditure increased 5.27% year-on-year to ₹5,567.30 crore in FY23 compared to ₹5,288.54 crore in preceding year. Its profit before tax was up 13.26% YoY at ₹4,583.60 crore in FY23 compared to ₹4,046.86 crore in previous financial year. Profit after tax (PAT) stood at ₹3,833.79 crore in FY23 compared to ₹3537.71 crore in FY22. The company’s earnings per share (EPS) increased to ₹3.82 as against ₹3.52 in FY22.
