One of the greatest events in Canara Bank’s history is the merger with Syndicate Bank, which became effective on April 1, 2020. This merger added substantial assets and a large customer base to the bank’s portfolio. Through this merger, Canara Bank expanded its branch network to over 10,000 across India.

History of Canara Bank

Canara Bank’s journey began in 1906 in the small town of Mangalore, founded by Ammembal Subba Rao Pai. He had a simple vision of banking for the masses.

What started as a modest institution slowly grew by focusing on ethical banking and customer-centric values, and inclusive growth.

After nationalisation in 1969, Canara Bank rapidly expanded, strengthening its presence across urban and rural India. Over the decades, with technological advancement, it has adapted to changing financial needs.

Canara Bank Business Segments

  • Retail Banking: This segment of Canara Bank connects directly with individuals, offering savings and current accounts, FD, personal loans, home loans, etc.

  • Corporate Banking: The bank supports large corporations and institutions with banking solutions like financing working capital, term loans, project financing and cash management services.

  • MSME Banking: In this segment, Canara Bank actively funds small and medium businesses through customised credit products, helping entrepreneurs grow and scale their companies.

  • Agriculture and Rural Banking: In this segment, Canara Bank provides crop loans, agri-infrastruture finance and financial inclusion services to farmers and rural communities.

  • Digital Banking: From mobile and internet banking to UPI, cards and payments solutions. Canara Bank continues to enhance convenience through technology-driven services.

Business operations

Canara Bank provides services to over 11.19 crore customers through a network of 9,518 branches and 12,118 ATMs in all states and Union Territories. It also has branches in the United Kingdom, the United States, the United Arab Emirates and Tanzania.

Canara Bank launched the "Canara ai1" mobile banking app in FY2023. The application offers over 250 features, serving the banking requirements of customers in 11 languages.

Canara Bank has witnessed many milestones. These include the launch of the first inter-city ATM network and obtaining ISO certification for a branch. It is also the first to establish an exclusive mahila banking branch. Canara Bank is also the first bank to issue a specialised credit card for farmers.

The public lender has set up six digital banking units in Virudhunagar, Kavaratti, Ernakulam, Coimbatore, Raichur and Devanahalli to increase inclusiveness. This expansion brings the total number of digital banking units to 14.

Canara Bank has many subsidiaries and joint ventures that contribute to its diverse portfolio. The subsidiaries include, Canbank Factors Limited, Canara Robeco Asset Management Company Limited, Canbank Financial Services Limited, Canara Bank Securities Limited, Canbank Venture Capital Fund Limited and Canara HSBC Life Insurance Company.

It also has some rural banks as its subsidiaries including Karnataka Gramin Bank, Kerala Gramin Bank and Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank.

Under its green financing initiatives, the bank offers diverse sustainable financing options. These include support for renewable energy projects, Compressed Biogas and Energy Conservation Scheme, Solar Pump Scheme under PM-KUSUM and the Canara Green Wheels scheme for electric vehicles.

Operating Profit: The company reported an operating profit of ₹23,025.02 crore in FY25 vs ₹19,999.56 crore in FY24. It showed an increase of 15.12% on a year-on-year basis, indicating that the company's operating profit is growing well.

Net Profit: Canara Bank reported a net profit of ₹17,335.99 crore in FY25 compared to ₹14,782.36 crore in FY24. It showed an increase of 17.27% on a yearly basis, indicating an improvement in overall performance.
