Canara Bank is a leading public sector bank. Founded by Ammembal Subba Rao Pai in July 1906 in Mangalore, Karnataka, it is now headquartered in Bengaluru. After bank nationalisation in 1969, it expanded its operations across India.
The public sector lender provides financial and banking services across personal banking, NRI banking, retail loans, cash management services, SME loans, credit card and corporate banking. In its journey spanning more than a century, Canara Bank has gone through several transformations and business diversifications. The bank also boasts a track record of consistent profits since its inception.
The market capitalisation of Canara Bank stood at over ₹80,600 crore as of December 18, 2023. Canara Bank share price has surged more than 265% in the last three years.
Business operations
Canara Bank provides services to over 11.19 crore customers through a network of 9,518 branches and 12,118 ATMs in all states and Union Territories. It also has branches in the United Kingdom, the United States, the United Arab Emirates and Tanzania.
Canara Bank launched the "Canara ai1" mobile banking app in FY2023. The application offers over 250 features, serving the banking requirements of customers in 11 languages.
Canara Bank has witnessed many milestones. These include the launch of the first inter-city ATM network and obtaining ISO certification for a branch. It is also the first to establish an exclusive mahila banking branch. Canara Bank is also the first bank to issue a specialised credit card for farmers.
The public lender has set up six digital banking units in Virudhunagar, Kavaratti, Ernakulam, Coimbatore, Raichur and Devanahalli to increase inclusiveness. This expansion brings the total number of digital banking units to 14.
Canara Bank has many subsidiaries and joint ventures that contribute to its diverse portfolio. The subsidiaries include, Canbank Factors Limited, Canara Robeco Asset Management Company Limited, Canbank Financial Services Limited, Canara Bank Securities Limited, Canbank Venture Capital Fund Limited and Canara HSBC Life Insurance Company.
It also has some rural banks as its subsidiaries including Karnataka Gramin Bank, Kerala Gramin Bank and Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank.
Under its green financing initiatives, the bank offers diverse sustainable financing options. These include support for renewable energy projects, Compressed Biogas and Energy Conservation Scheme, Solar Pump Scheme under PM-KUSUM and the Canara Green Wheels scheme for electric vehicles.
Financial Highlights
Revenue of the company stood at ₹1,03,186.98 crore in FY23 as against revenue of ₹85907.15 crore in FY22. The net profit stood at ₹10,603.76 crore as against ₹5,678.42 crore in FY22. In FY23, the bank’s net interest income (NII) stood at ₹31,435 crore. The operating profit surged 20% to ₹27,716 crore in FY23 as against ₹23,089 crore in the preceding fiscal. The net worth as of March 31, 2023, was at ₹60,195 crore and the total paid-up capital of the bank stood at ₹1,814.13 crore. The bank’s net interest margin (NIM) surged by 13 bps YoY in FY23 to 2.95% from 2.82% in FY22. Canara Bank made a total capital expenditure of ₹83,235 crore in FY23. The earnings per share (EPS) surged to ₹62.04 in FY23 compared to ₹35.04 in the last financial year.
