NIFTY50 slips below 24,400, Nifty Bank hits one-month low dragged by ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank
Indian equity benchmarks extended their losing streak for the fifth straight session on Thursday. The NSE NIFTY50 opened with a gap down in morning, but managed to recover from the day's lows as the trading progressed. The index, however, could not close in the positive as it ended 0.03% or 7.40 points lower at 24,406.10. Heavyweights like HDFC Bank and Kotak Bank led the NIFTY50 recovery from the day's lower level. Meanwhile, the BSE SENSEX closed 109.08 points lower at 80,039.80.
Coming to the NIFTY50 index pullers and draggers, L&T (+27.11 pts), Tata Motors (+24.45 pts), HDFC Bank (+21.64 pts), ONGC (+13.63 pts), and Kotak Bank (+10.65 pts) were the pullers of the day. Draggers included ICICI Bank (-41.71 pts), Axis Bank (-40.52 pts), ITC (-8.05 pts), Titan (-6.93 pts), and Infosys (-6.21 pts).
Today, the broader market closed in negative territory. The Nifty Midcap 100 declined by -0.23%, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index slipped -0.27%. Market breadth was strong on Thursday as the advancing stocks outnumbered the declining stocks.
Most of the sectoral indices closed negatively, while the banking indices faced selling pressure from last two days. The top three gainers were NIFTY Oil & Gas (+2.22%), NIFTY Auto (+1.26%), and NIFTY Pharma (+0.94%). The top three losers were NIFTY Metal (-1.29%), NIFTY Private Bank (-0.92%), and NIFTY Consumer Durables (-0.84%).
Asian markets concluded Thursday's trading session lower. The Hang Seng declined by 1.77%, the Shanghai index closed down by 0.52%, the Nikkei 225 Index plunged by 3.14%, and the Kospi index lost 1.73%.
At 3:51 PM, the Dow Jones Futures were trading slightly up by 5 points at 40,115.
