ABB announced on Wednesday that Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has selected ABB Robotics’ PixelPaint technology to deliver personalised paint options for its new line of electric vehicles (EVs). Following the announcement, shares of ABB were trading higher by nearly 1%.

ABB reported that its PixelPaint technology uses a paint jet similar to an inkjet printer and will begin serial production in 2025. The company said that PixelPaint contains 1,000 tiny, individually controlled nozzles that are mounted on an ABB robot like the IRB5500 paint series. ABB’s 3D vision system and RobotStudio planning and programming software help ensure that 100% of the paint is applied to the car with no overspray or airborne misting.

The company stated that PixelPaint eliminates the labour-intensive process of masking and reduces the need for repeat trips to the paint shop. The technology helps in the reproduction of precise details while generating zero waste, it said.

ABB and M&M’s partnership includes 42 robots from the IRB5500 series and makes M&M the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to utilise PixelPaint for the painting of contrasting roofs and pillars.

Joerg Reger, managing director of ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line said that PixelPaint has the ability to apply large areas of uniform colour along with tiny details with accuracy.

“By deploying PixelPaint-equipped robots in dedicated cells, Mahindra’s paint shop will be able to apply finishes such as contrasting roof and pillar treatments on its new line of EVs in a completely automated process,” Reger said.

ABB is a technology company involved in electrification and automation. The company’s solutions connect engineering know-how and software to optimize how things are manufactured, moved, powered and operated.

Shares of the company have risen by nearly 83% since the beginning of the year. The stock has gained over 94% in the last one year.
