Ever wondered why your anticipated trade profit wasn't credited to your account or why your account is showing a negative fund balance? This article simplifies possible reasons this could happen. It covers factors like previous debit amounts, taxes, charges, pending settlements, and settlement holidays.
1. Previous debit amount
Your fund balance might be negative or would have been reduced due to various factors, including:
Trade-related charges (Taxes and charges) - If your profit falls short of expectations, review the taxes and charges debited in trade-related transactions. Access this information through the ledger report and the Profit and Loss report. For detailed insights, please refer here.
Trading transactions- Your account may have trading-related activities (buy and sell), which can be viewed under the Ledger Report
Payout (withdrawals) - Quarterly settlements and fund withdrawals. You can find additional information here
Account maintenance charges-The Annual Maintenance Charge (AMC) is a fixed yearly fee that is levied to maintain your Demat account. You can review these charges under Maintenance Charges and check for negative balances under Unpaid Charges in the Funds section.
KYC modification-Any modification to your account details—such as email, phone number, date of birth, nominee, or bank details—incurs a ₹50 charge.
In addition to brokerage and transaction fees, you may also encounter auto square-off and call & trade charges.

Note: To avoid extra charges, ensure your account has sufficient funds before placing trades and monitor your ledger regularly.
3. Pending settlement
Understanding the settlement cycle is crucial for accurate fund tracking. For shares sold from your Demat account or T+1 (T1) holdings, the settlement follows the exchange-prescribed timeline.

4. Settlement holidays
During settlement holidays, it's possible that the sell amount from the previous day may not reflect in your account. However, it will be available on the next trading day.
Refer to the Ledger report to ascertain the amount and details.
5. Scheduled maintenance activity
Due to scheduled maintenance activity between 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM, there could be instances when your fund balance might not be accurate. Please check your balance after 6:00 AM for accurate information.
Note: All charges mentioned above apply to the Basic Brokerage Plan. To view details of the Upstox Plus Plan charges, please refer here for the Upstox Plus Plan
