Hindustan Zinc Q1 update: Refined zinc, lead production rise, silver output down 7% YoY

Leading zinc producer Hindustan Zinc has reported a 2% rise in mined metal production at 2,63,000 tonnes for the April-June quarter of FY 2024-25 compared to 2,57,000 tonnes in the year ago period.

The mined metal production, however, was down by 12% sequentially in the first quarter of FY25 compared to 2,99,000 tonnes in the previous March quarter of FY 2023-24.

According to the company, production was down quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) as mine preparation activities were carried out in the first quarter.

Releasing its production numbers for the first quarter that ended June 30, 2024, Hindustan Zinc said that it delivered its highest-ever first quarter mined metal and refined metal production.

Refined metal production was marginally up by 1% at 2,62,000 tonnes in Q1FY25 compared to 2,60,000 tonnes in the year-ago period. The production was down 4% sequentially in line with plant availability and pyro operations on lead mode for later part of 1QFY25. Refined metal production was 273,000 tonnes in the March quarter.

Refined zinc production was also up 1% at 211,000 tonnes in the June quarter compared to the year ago period but was down 4% on a QoQ basis.

Refined lead production rose by 2% to 51,000 tonnes compared to the year-ago period.

Saleable silver production dropped by 7% to 167 tonnes on a yearly basis and by 12% on a quarterly basis as the company moved to pyro operations on lead mode from June 24.

HZL’s wind power generation was 108 MU, up 78% sequentially and down 11% YoY, in line with wind velocity and seasonality impact.

Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company, is the world’s second-largest zinc producer and the third-largest silver producer. The company supplies products to more than 40 countries and holds a market share of about 75% of the primary zinc market in India.

HZL shares opened on a firm note and rose further to a high of ₹658 per share in morning deals on Wednesday.

Hindustan Zinc shares were trading at ₹675, up 3.46%, on the NSE at 1:16 pm.
