NIFTY50 and Sensex close at record high, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, LTI Mindtree amongst top gainers; Stock Market Highlights

The NIFTY Financial Services (+1.3%) index closed higher today. ICICI Bank(+1.9%), HDFC Bank(+1.2%) were the top gainers, whereas HDFC Life (-1.7%), REC (-0.7%) were the top losers.

The NIFTY Smallcap 100 index closed 0.8% higher. The NIFTY Midcap 100 Index also closed in green, up 1.3%.

The BANK NIFTY (+1.3%) index closed in green, before touching lifetime high. Gains in ICICI Bank(+1.9%), HDFC Bank(+1.2%), IndusInd Bank(+2.9%) supported the index.

NIFTY50 (+1.2%) and SENSEX (+1.3%) closed at record highs today. The US Federal Reserve held its key interest rate steady for the third time. Out of the NIFTY50 universe, 38 stocks advanced. On the sectoral front, Realty and IT were the top gainers, while Media was the sole sectoral loser today.

Indian markets rebounded to hit a new all-time high today. NIFTY50 (+1.2%) touched a high of 21,210, while SENSEX gained over 1000 points. Meanwhile, NIFTY BANK also jumped 1.5% intraday, hitting a 52-week high of 47,943. Here are the top factors that contributed to this rally.

• The US Federal Reserve held its key interest rate steady for the third time. The central bank signalled the end of its interest rate hike cycle amid improving macroeconomic data. Also, the central bank indicated potential 75 basis point cuts in 2024, unlike previous projections.

• Following the upbeat commentary from the US Fed, the yield on the 10-year treasury note dropped below 4%. This is the lowest level since August 2023, which is positive for the equities markets.

• Foreign investors continue to pour funds into the Indian equity markets. In yesterday's session, FIIs were net buyers, buying shares worth ₹4,710.86 crore. So far in December, FIIs bought shares worth ₹33,959 crore.

• Besides this, a rally in global stock markets, including Asian and European markets, also added to gains in the Indian markets. Meanwhile, all major US indices jumped to fresh highs of 2023 in yesterday's trading session.

European markets are trading in the green today amid positive global macro cues. The UK’s FTSE is up 1.9%, while Germany’s DAX is up 0.7%. France’s CAC (+0.9%) is also making gains.

• NIFTY IT index was amongst the top sectoral gainers today. The index reached a record high after the US Federal Reserve meeting pointed to interest rate cuts in 2024. The central bank indicated potential 75 basis point cuts in 2024, unlike previous projections.

• This is positive for the IT sector as the industry has struggled with a challenging macro environment in recent quarters. The global slowdown prompted companies to cut down on IT spendings. However, recent data suggests ease in macroeconomic conditions in the US and other countries, which is positive for the sector.

Zydus Lifesciences has received final approval from the USFDA for cyclophosphamide capsules. The drug will be manufactured at the company’s facility in Ahmedabad. These capsules are used to slow the growth of cancer cells. As per IQVIA, the annual sales for these capsules were $ 6 million in the US market.
