Why am I not able to see the amount after I have squared off my MTF Positions?

When you square off (sell off) an MTF position, the funds don't appear immediately in your account. They become available in the next trading session. This happens because of how pledged shares are processed under Indian settlement rules.

Why MTF settlements are different than regular trades?

When you buy shares through Margin Trading Facility (MTF), you pay a portion (margin), and broker funds the rest. To secure this funding, the shares are pledged with CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited) as collateral. Even though they are in your demat account, they remain tagged as pledged until the loan is repaid.

Difference

  • In regular delivery trades, funds are available immediately after settlement

  • In MTF trades, an extra step needed to unpledge shares. Hence, funds get available next session.

What happens when you square off MTF?

When you sell the pledged shares , trade settles normally It goes through the T+1 settlement cycle. However, since shares were pledged, the broker and CDSL must complete unpledging.

This extra unpledging step is why you see your position as 'T1 Holdings' and why funds are not immediately available.

Why can't brokers speed this up?

All brokers must follow SEBI and exchange regulations. The T1 settlement framework is mandatory for MTF transactions. This ensures,

  • Orderly settlement - Proper reconciliation between broker, depository, and exchange
  • Risk management - Protection for both trader and broker
  • Regulatory compliance - Adherence to Indian securities laws

The money is secured and on its way! You just can't access it until the settlement completes.

Important notes

  • This applies to all MTF positions, whether held for hours or months
  • The settlement cycle remains same, irrespective of holding duration
  • RMS (Risk Management System) policies protect both you and the broker
  • All processes comply with NSE and BSE MTF regulations
