What is CUSPA? (Client Unpaid Securities Pledge Account )
CUSPA is a temporary account where your purchased shares are held if you haven’t fully paid for them. If your trading account balance is negative after buying shares, those shares are moved to CUSPA and stay pledged there until you clear the payment.
Example 1
- You buy 100 shares at ₹1,000 each → ₹1,00,000.
- After adding brokerage and statutory charges, the total bill is ₹1,01,000.
- You have ₹1,00,000 in your account, leaving a ₹1,000 debit.
- During payout, shares worth ₹1,500 (₹1,000 × 150%) will be pledged under CUSPA.
Example 2
- You buy 100 shares at ₹1,000 each → ₹1,00,000.
- After charges, your bill is ₹1,01,000.
- You have no cash balance and make the purchase using margin pledge value.
- Your wallet/ledger balance becomes –₹1,01,000.
- In this case, the entire ₹1,00,000 worth of purchased shares will be pledged under CUSPA.
Difference between Pledge and Auto Pledge
- In Margin pledge: You voluntarily pledge your own shares to get margin for F&O trading, Commodities, Equity Intraday, and Equity Delivery.
- Auto Pledge (CUSPA): Upstox automatically pledges your purchased shares for the unpaid amount in your account.
Settlement period
- Shares auto‑pledged under CUSPA remain pledged for 7 days (including the trade date)
- You must pay the pending amount within T+5 days to avoid unpledging and auto‑selling of shares
- Shares shall be auto‑released anytime after 7 working days from the settlement date.
Pledge Charges
- Auto-pledge charges are ₹50/- + GST
Unpledge Charges
- Auto-unpledge charges are ₹50/- + GST
A notification is sent to inform about the auto-pledging of the shares.
