Benchmark Indices - NSE Nifty 50 and the 30-share BSE Sensex started the trading session on Friday positively. The Sensex surged by +0.11% above the 74,400 level while the Nifty rose by +0.15% above the 22,600 level. India VIX, a gauge of volatility spiked by 2.8% at the opening bell.

US Markets On Thursday, key benchmark indices on Wall Street saw a downturn following revelations of sluggish US economic growth and persistent inflation. This created a stagflation kind of scenario, compounded by disappointing results from Meta Platforms which triggered a sell-off in large-cap stocks.

Top Gainer and Losers Within the Nifty 50 space, Tech Mahindra, Hindalco and Divi’s Laboratories are among the top gainers, while Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and Apollo Hospitals are among the top losers.

Broader Indices

In the broader markets Nifty Midcap 100 gained by 0.41% and is trading above 50,400 level, while Nifty Smallcap 100 has surged by 0.66% making a new all-time of 17,005.30 level.

Sectoral Performance

Within the sectoral landscape Nifty IT, Nifty Metal and Nifty Media are among the top gainers, while Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Realty are among the top losers.

Commodities

Early in Friday's trading session, oil prices climbed following remarks from the US Treasury secretary suggesting that the nation's economy may be more robust than suggested by lacklustre first-quarter data. This sentiment and ongoing concerns over supply due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East bolstered prices.

Brent crude futures increased by 34 cents (0.38%) to USD 89.35 per barrel. Gold prices stood flat at USD 2,346.65, up by 0.17% compared to its previous closing. Silver prices were trading higher by 0.44% at USD 27.488.
