Last week, the markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued a framework for introducing the beta version for a T+0 trade settlement cycle on an optional basis starting March 28, 2024.
Existing trade settlement cycle and how T+0 cycle is different
Currently, a T+1 settlement cycle is followed by all the stocks listed in Indian stock markets, which means the sale or purchase of equity shares will be reflected in the Demat accounts of investors a day after the transaction is conducted.
SEBI has now come up with a framework to test the beta version of a same-day trade settlement cycle (T+0) for a selected 25 stocks on an optional basis, and in addition to the existing T+1 settlement cycle.
The capital market regulator said last week that all the investors will be able to participate in the T+0 settlement cycle segment and trade these 25 stocks between 9.15 am and 1.30 pm starting March 28.
The main objective behind the introduction of a same-day trade settlement cycle is to bring in cost and time efficiency, along with transparency in charges to investors and strengthen risk management at clearing corporations and the overall securities market ecosystem.
