The formation of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, which undertakes an in-depth examination of economic policies and collectively decides on new proposals, was announced by the central government late on Wednesday, July 3.
The panel is constituted at an interval of five years each, following the conclusion of the general elections. It is chaired by the Prime Minister of India, includes the finance minister and other key ministers selected by the government.

In contrast to the two previous Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, the latest panel also includes the allies of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). H D Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) and Rajiv Ranjan Singh of the Janata Dal (United) have been included. In all, the committee comprises of 11 members.
In addition to the panel on economic affairs, the formation of committees related to security, parliamentary affairs, political affairs, investment and growth, and skill, livelihood and employment were also announced on July 3.
