India’s stock market will remain closed on two public holidays in April, apart from the regular closures over the weekend. The two bourses – the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE – will remain shut on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr celebrated on April 11, and Shree Ram Navami celebrated on April 17, as per the holiday calendar issued by them.

Eid and Ram Navami are among the two major festivals of the country, observed by the Hindu and Muslim communities, respectively. A public holiday has been notified for the two festivals in most states and union territories, which means that schools, colleges, banks, government offices and other institutions will remain shut on April 11 and April 17.

Apart from the closure of NSE and BSE, the trading session will remain partially suspended at the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX). As per the holiday calendar of the metal and energy exchange, the trading will remain closed in the morning session (9 am to 5 pm) on April 11 and April 17, on account of Eid and Ram Navami, respectively.

However, the trading in the evening session, that stretches from 5 pm to 9 pm, will remain open on April 11 and April 17, the MCX calendar clarifies.

The next date of public holiday marked by the bourses is May 1, observed as Labour Day and Maharashtra Day. The trading session of NSE and BSE will remain entirely shut on the date, whereas MCX will keep the morning session shut.

Bank holidays on Eid, Ram Navami

Public and private banks will remain closed on account of Eid on April 11 in all parts of the country except Kerala. The holiday was notified on April 10 in Kerala, as the southern coastal state observes Eid a day before the rest of the country due its differing lunar cycle.

The lenders will also remain closed on April 17 in all states and UTs, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, where the festival has been notified as a public holiday.
