WhatsApp, Instagram services restored after major global outage: What we know

WhatsApp and Instagram services were briefly disrupted on Wednesday. The outage affected the users of two Meta-owned platforms with error messages saying services are unavailable. The services have been restored now.

According to the outage tracking website Downdetector, WhatsApp received over 46,000 outage reports. Users encountered messages such as "We're having trouble connecting to WhatsApp. Please try again in a few minutes".

Instagram users reported more than 3,400 outages, and there were also reports of issues with Facebook.

In a post on X, WhatsApp said, "We know some people are experiencing issues right now, we're working on getting things back to 100% for everyone as quickly as possible."

In another tweet, it informed users, "And we're back. Happy chatting!"

Last month, Facebook and Instagram faced an outage, impacting hundreds of thousands of users globally. It was due to a technical issue. Error messages like "log in again", "couldn't refresh feed", and "session expired" were appearing while using the Meta-owned applications.

WhatsApp had last reported a major outage in 2022 when its services went offline for two hours.

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has a combined total of 3.19 billion daily active users across all of its apps, including Threads.
