Maruti Suzuki March auto sales up 10% at 1.87 lakh units, exports dip 14%

Maruti Suzuki posted total vehicle sales of 1.87 lakh units in March 2024, which is 10% lower as compared to 1.70 lakh units sold in the year-ago period, as per the data shared by the automobile major with the exchanges on Monday, April 1.

Of the total sales registered last month, exports accounted for 25,892 units, which is 14% lower as against 30,119 units exported in March 2023.

While exports dipped, the total domestic sales surged by 15% year-on-year. The company said it sold 156,330 vehicles in the domestic market, higher than 136,787 cars sold in March 2023. The numbers exclude the units that were sold to original equipment manufacturers.

Of the total domestic sales of 1.56 lakh units last month, passenger vehicles (PVs) accounted for 152,718 of the units sold, and the remaining 3,612 pertained to the light commercial vehicles (LCV) segment.

Within PVs, 82,263 of the units that were sold belonged to mini, compact and mid-sized categories. This is marginally lower as compared to 83,714 units sold in March 2023. The cars under these categories include Alto, S-Presso, Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, Tour S, and WagonR.

Maruti Suzuki also sold 58,436 utility vehicles, which comprises brands such as Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, S-Cross and XL6. This is 58% higher as compared to 37,054 utility vehicles sold by the company in March 2023.

The data revealed by Maruti also showed that it sold 12,019 vans in March 2024, as against 11,995 units sold in the year-ago period.

Highest-ever year sales

Maruti, in a release, noted that its total vehicle sales in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, came in at 21,35,323 units, which is “the highest-ever”. In FY23, the company had clocked a total sales of 19,66,164 units.

The total sales in FY24 include “highest ever domestic sales of 17,93,644 units and highest ever exports of 2,83,067 units”, it added.

The data was disclosed by Maruti shortly before the conclusion of market trading hours. At the closing bell, the stock was valued at ₹12,595.35 apiece on the NSE, down 0.4% as against the previous day’s close.
