Banks will remain closed in some cities on Friday, April 19, in view of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024. While the voting will be held in 102 constituencies across 21 states and union territories, the banks will remain closed in seven cities, as per the holiday calendar of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

The list of cities where April 19 would be observed as a bank holiday includes Chennai, Dehradun, Itanagar, Jaipur, Kohima, Nagpur and Shillong.

Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu, where all 39 parliamentary seats will be contested in the first round of the elections. Similarly, Dehradun is the capital city of Uttarakhand, where voting will be held on April 19 in all the five Lok Sabha seats.

Similarly, Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, Jaipur of Rajasthan, Kohima of Nagaland and Shillong of Meghalaya. Meanwhile, Nagpur, where banks will also remain closed on April 19, is the largest city in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region. Nagpur is among the five seats of Vidarbha that will go to polls in the first phase.

States voting in 1st phase of elections

The states where elections will be held during the first phase of the general elections, on April 19, are as follows: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Maharashtra, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, , Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and Tripura.

A bank holiday has not been declared in all the constituencies where voting will be held in the first phase. So far, the RBI holiday calendar mentions only seven cities.

Public holiday

A public holiday has been declared on April 19 in Nagaland, Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu, which are among the states where voting will be held in the first phase. This means that schools, colleges and government offices will remain closed on the day in these three provinces.

Election dates

Notably, the general elections will be held in seven phases. The first two phases will be held this month, on April 19 and April 26. This would be followed by the third round of voting on May 7, fourth on May 13, fifth on May 20, sixth on May 25 and the final phase on June 1. The counting of votes has been scheduled by the Election Commission on June 4.
