Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur announced that 45 crore Jan Dhan accounts have collectively amassed ₹2.1 lakh crore. He made this declaration during the inauguration of the 2024 Annual Government and Institutional Business Meet of the Federal Bank.

Congratulating the Federal Bank for achieving an all-time high share price, Minister Thakur reflected on the period preceding the current government, highlighting a shift from policy paralysis to the mantra of Reform, Perform, Transform since 2014. He commended the banking sector for breaking free from debt constraints and achieving unprecedented performance levels.

Minister Thakur underscored the government's actions against economic offenders, citing the implementation of the Economic Offenders Bill and ongoing efforts to extradite offenders. Notably, the gross NPA has decreased to 3.2%, and the return on assets has risen from 0.5% to 0.79% in 2023.

Recalling the scepticism surrounding the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Minister Thakur proudly stated that the government has successfully opened 45 crore bank accounts under the scheme, accumulating a substantial corpus of ₹2.1 lakh crore, contributing significantly to the banking ecosystem.

He noted a similar initial scepticism towards digital payments post-demonetization but highlighted the success of BHIM UPI in facilitating even the smallest transactions. Minister Thakur credited such initiatives for elevating India from the Fragile five to one of the world's Top five economies, with ambitions to become the 3rd largest economy soon.

Highlighting the government's commitment to accountability and transparency, Minister Thakur mentioned that 25 crore people have emerged from multidimensional poverty over the past decade. He attributed this progress to effective implementation of government schemes, ensuring that a hundred percent of social sector scheme expenditures reach beneficiaries through the JAM trinity.

Assuring continued bold initiatives, Minister Thakur expressed the government's determination to propel India into the top three economies within the next five years and transform it into a developed country by 2047.
