New Delhi Television, or NDTV, is a subsidiary of AMG Media Networks Limited and a part of the Adani Group. As of March 31, 2023, the Adani Group held a majority stake of 64.71% in the company.

The company’s history spans over a quarter-century. Founded in 1988 by Radhika Roy and Prannoy Roy, NDTV is a well-known name in Indian news media.

NDTV was India’s first independent news network. When it was founded in 1988, it was a time when the government-run Doordarshan had a monopoly over television content.

Initially, NDTV was a television software production company with a very popular weekly show, The World This Week, which used to be aired on Doordarshan. The company was also behind the first private news programme on Doordarshan, The News Tonight.

In 1989, the channel achieved a first when it became the broadcaster in India to provide live televised coverage of an election result.

In February 1998, NDTV signed a contract with Star Network and launched India’s first 24-hour news channel Star News. The company owns the flagship website, ndtv.com.

NDTV owns well-known news channels such as NDTV 24x7 in English and NDTV India in Hindi. The company’s comprehensive offering in the business channel is NDTV Profit.

NDTV Convergence is the company’s digital arm which leverages the TV, internet and mobile platforms TV at ndtv.com.

In 2015, NDTV entered the e-commerce industry through Gadgets360, CarAndBike.com and BandBaajaa. Com. Gadgets 360 covers the world of technology with news and reviews.

NDTV launched two new regional channels – NDTV Rajasthan, NDTV Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh – in 2023. The company also announced that it is all set to launch nine news channels in different languages.

With offices and studios located across India, NDTV 24x7 is the only English news channel from India that’s available in several countries, including UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Mauritius, and most SAARC countries.

The company’s venture, Mojarto.com, is an art marketplace offering affordable and unique Indian art and collectibles, including original paintings, digital prints, jewellery and decor items.

NDTV’s ownership changed hands during the fiscal year 2022-23. With effect from December 30, 2022, the Adani Group Companies — RRPR Holding Private Limited and Vishvapradhan Commercial Private Limited — acquired the controlling stake in the company. As of March 31, 2023, NDTV had 508 employees.

The company went public in May 2004. The company is listed on BSE Limited and National Stock Exchange (NSE). With a market capitalisation of over ₹1,600 crore as of December 29, 2023, NDTV’s share price has gained 550% in three years.

In FY23, NDTV reported a net profit of ₹52.93 crore, compared to ₹84.76 crore it reported in the previous fiscal year. NDTV’s revenues amounted to ₹399.78 crore in FY23, compared to ₹419.15 crore in FY22. The company’s earnings per share (EPS) dropped to ₹7.56 in FY23, compared to ₹12.38 in the previous fiscal year. The company’s EBITDA was ₹70.96 crore in FY23, compared to ₹122.90 crore in the previous fiscal year.
