Trent Limited was founded in 1998, initially known as Lakme Limited, which was founded in 1952. Lakme primarily focused on manufacturing, selling, and exporting cosmetic products.

However, in 1998, decide to divest its cosmetics business and venture into retailing due to a lack of established brands in many categories. This led Lakme to venture into the apparel industry and soft goods retail market by launching a chain of departmental stores nationwide.
