How is the Price of LPG Cylinders Determined in India?
LPG prices in India are revised every month, and the price is fixed by oil marketing companies, driven by changes in international market prices and market conditions. India heavily imports LPG from the Middle Eastern countries and the US, hence, international LPG prices impact the import parity price of petroleum products.
Since LPG is traded globally in U.S. dollars, exchange rate changes also affect LPG prices. If the U.S dollar continues to strengthen against the Indian rupee, LPG will become more expensive for India.
The price determined by Oil marketing companies is for a non-subsidised domestic LPG cylinder. The government offers subsidised LPG cylinders to the general public under the 'Pratyaksha Hastantarit Laabh' direct benefit transfer scheme. In this scheme, a consumer with an annual income of up to ₹10 Lakh can avail a cash subsidy on LPG cylinders purchased at market price, and the subsidy is later credited directly to their bank account.
As LPG prices increase, the government also increases the subsidy amount for PAHAL consumers. For example, recently, when LPG prices increased, the government increased the LPG cylinder subsidy to ₹553 per cylinder. This ensures that the subsidised LPG consumers are protected from the price volatility of LPG prices in the international market. The cost of refining crude oil to produce LPG will also impact the LPG prices in India. If the cost of refining is high, LPG prices will rise.

India imports 40% of LPG fuel from the U.S and the Middle East.

India imports over 60% of LPG fuel from the U.S and the Middle East. Hence, a weak rupee will make LPG more expensive for India, driving up domestic prices.

Components of LPG
LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas and it is also known as butane or propane. LPG is made up of a group of flammable hydrocarbon gases, such as butane and propane, along with smaller amounts of unsaturated hydrocarbons like propylene and butylene, which are liquefied through pressurisation.
LPG is commonly used as a fuel for cooking, heating equipment and powering vehicles. It is produced during the refining process of crude oil or extracted from the natural gas streams emanating from the ground or produced by refining petroleum products.
How Is LPG Produced?
LPG is a mixture of propane and butane and comes from two main sources: natural gas and refining of crude oil. At refineries, when crude oil is heated up for the distillation process, LPG is taken out during the distillation or cracking process.
At gas plants, heavier gases such as propane and hydrocarbons are separated from natural gas using cold distillation or absorption processes. Later, water, Hydrogen Sulfide and CO2 is removed from it to make it appropriate for use. LPG is then turned into a liquid at around 8 bar pressure. This liquefied fuel can be stored in cylinders, tanks or specialised ships made for the storage and transfer of LPG.
Types of LPG Cylinders in India
There are two types of LPG cylinders in India.
Domestic Cylinders
The domestic cylinder is used for household use and can be bought from any gas distributor in the country. The LPG prices in India are determined by Oil Marketing Companies by considering several factors such as currency exchange rate and international crude oil prices.
To protect the LPG against the price volatility of LPG, the government offers a cash subsidy on LPG cylinders. As global LPG prices rise, the government also increase the subsidy on LPG cylinders. The consumer has to pay the full price at the time of delivery of LPG cylinders; subsequently, the cash subsidy is directly sent to the consumer's bank account linked with the gas connection.
The subsidy amount on domestic cylinders varies based on city and the states, usually ranging between ₹420 – ₹465 for a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder. In India, you can get a small LPG cylinder of 5 kgs and a bigger cylinder of 14.2 kgs, depending on your requirements.
Commercial Cylinders
The commercial cylinders are specifically meant for non-domestic use, such as hotels, restaurants, industries, eateries, transportation, electricity generation and agricultural usage, among other uses. The LPG prices for commercial cylinders in India are determined by Oil Marketing Companies and are revised monthly. International crude oil prices and currency exchange rates heavily influence LPG cylinder prices, hence taken into account when fixing the prices of commercial LPG prices for the month.
Commercial LPG cylinders and Domestic LPG cylinders are painted blue and red, respectively, for easy identification. Commercial LPG cylinder prices are higher than Domestic LPG cylinder prices since no subsidy is offered on them.

Bharat Gas
Bharat Gas is a brand of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and is a major Indian LPG provider serving 80 million homes with safe and clean LPG fuel. You can apply for a new gas connection in India through their official web portal. To get a new LPG connection, you need to submit certain documents, based on which your eligibility for the subsidy provided by the government of India will be determined. If you move houses, Bharat Gas offers the facility to transfer your connection from one place to any other part of the country.
Indane Gas
Indane Gas is an LPG brand run by Indian Oil Corporation. Indane Gas offers LPG connections to homes and commercial LPG cylinders as well. You can get an LPG connection in India from Indane Gas by submitting the required documents to any Indane Gas distributor. The distributor will assess your documents and determine if you qualify for the several schemes provided by the government to avail subsidies on your LPG cylinder purchases.
You can register for a new LPG connection through the online mode or by personally visiting the Indane Gas Distributor. If you want to refill your LPG cylinders, you can book them through the Indane Gas web portal online, through your phone or via SMS. You can also find the list of Indane Gas distributors by visiting the company's official website.
HP Gas
HP Gas is the brand name for LPG cylinders marketed by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited. HP is a state-run oil company that provides gas connections to customers for household use all over India. For securing a new LPG connection, you need to submit all the required documents mentioned in the application form to the HP distributor.
The HP Gas distributor will scrutinise your documents and verify if you are eligible for the subsidy under the government's scheme. If you are eligible, you will be required to pay the full price at the time of purchasing LPG cylinders, later, the subsidy amount will be credited to your linked bank account. If you are an existing customer wanting to transfer your gas connection from one place to another within the country, you can do so by contacting your distributor.
How to Book an LPG Cylinder in India?
You can apply for a new LPG cylinder in India by contacting a LPG distributor nearest to you. First, you have to pick the company you want to get an LPG connection from, for example, Bharat Gas. Once you have selected your LPG provider, contact and visit any one of its distributors within India (can be found on the LPG provider's web portal) or via online mode.

You can visit the LPG provider's distributor agent at their nearest office and book a refilled cylinder by providing your customer number. When the LPG cylinder is delivered to your home, you can pay the full bill amount.
Online Mode
You can now book a cylinder online from the comfort of your home by providing your user ID and password after registering with the LPG provider. All oil marketing companies, such as HPCL, BPCL and IOCL, provide online LPG cylinder booking options to their customers through their official web portal. Certain distributors offer discounts on the retail price of an LPG cylinder if you choose to book your LPG cylinder online. This saves you from the hassle of physically visiting the distributor every month. If you choose to book your cylinder online, you can make the payment by using your Debit or Credit card or use net banking and UPI options.
Mobile App
Most of the LPG providers have a mobile app for Android and iPhones, allowing customers to book LPG cylinders within minutes. All you have to do is download the app of your gas distributor from the Play Store and register yourself on the mobile app by entering the correct mobile number, e-mail address etc. You will receive a one-time password (OTP) on your registered mobile number for the authentication process.
Once you have registered yourself on the app, you can book for refilling empty cylinders. You can choose to pay for the LPG cylinder through debit or credit card, net banking and UPI. LPG cylinder providers have also introduced e-wallet options that makes the payment procedure easier for customers booking LPG cylinders through the mobile app.
SMS Mode
Customers also have the option to book LPG cylinders via SMS mode by registering their mobile number with the gas distributor. There is a specific format that you need to follow while sending an SMS for booking a new cylinder. IVRS Mode
IVRS stands for Interactive Voice Response System. It is an automated telephony tool that allows computers to interact with humans by using Voice and dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) tones input using keyboard or speech. This system allows customers to book a refill cylinder 24/7 by making a phone call. Major LPG providers such as Indane Gas and Bharat Gas use the IVRS system to provide a seamless and convenient booking of LPG cylinders. The customer has to call on the dedicated IVR number provided by their LPG distributor to place a booking by following simple voice prompts and using their phone's keyboard.

How Many Domestic LPG Cylinders Can You Purchase in India?
In India, every household is allowed to purchase a maximum of 12 domestic LPG cylinders per year. You can avail of government subsidies on the purchase of 12 domestic cylinders. If you purchase more than 12 LPG cylinders in a year, you will be charged the non-subsidised rate from the 13th LPG cylinder onwards.
