Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) is an FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) company established in 1933 and headquartered in Mumbai. The company is a subsidiary of Unilever, which is an Anglo-Dutch company. The company manufactures goods such as personal care products, food, beverages, cleaning products and other consumer goods.
History of Hindustan Unilever Limited
The company was first established in India as Hindustan Vanaspati Manufacturing Co. Later merged with constituent groups in 1956 and was renamed as Hindustan Lever Limited. In June 2007, the company was renamed again as Hindustan Unilever Limited.

- 1956: Amalgamation With Hindustan Vanaspati Manufacturing Co. Ltd & United Traders Ltd.
The Hindustan Vanaspatu Manufacturing Co. Ltd and United Traders merged with the Lever Brothers (India) Limited to form Hindustan Lever Limited.
- 1972-84 Acquisition of Lipton and Brooke Bond
In 1972, Hindustan Lever acquired Liptop, a well-known tea brand, and in 1977 established Lipton Tea (Indian) Ltd, which helped the company enter the beverage market. In 1984, the company acquired another tea brand named Brooke Bond.
- 1986-1996: Personal Care Products
Hindustan Lever Ltd continued to expand and entered the personal care product market by acquiring Pond (India) Ltd. Later in 1993, HUL merged with the Tata Oil Mills Company (TOMCO) and expanded its personal care product portfolio.
- 1992-1998 HUL entered into a 50:50 joint venture with the US-based Kimberly-Clark Corporation, leading to the establishment of Kimberly-Clark Lever Ltd. In 1994, HUL acquired Kissan, which was one of the leading brands in the food sector and later acquired the Lakme brand in 1996.

Home Care
The home care business segment focuses on producing household cleaning products such as Vim, Domes and Cif cream cleaner, along with fabric washing products such as Surf Excel, Rin, Active Wheel and Comfort.
Beauty & Personal Care
A major portion of HUL’s revenue comes from the sale of beauty and personal care products. The company produces skin care, hair care, and oral care products. It also manufactures and distributes cosmetics and grooming products.
Foods & Refreshments
This business segment focuses on producing packaged goods, beverages and drinks according to the Indian customer base. The company has famous brands such as Lipton, Red Label, and Taaza that have proved to be household favourites.
