HBL Power Systems Limited, earlier known as Sab Nife Power Systems, is a company specialising in batteries and power systems. It is headquartered in Hyderabad.

It started the business with the objective of manufacturing nickel-cadmium pocket plate batteries. The first products successfully developed were aircraft batteries, eventually leading to HBL offering the world's widest range of specialised batteries.

In 1991, HBL Power Systems Limited started manufacturing 10KVA UPS (uninterrupted power supply) and allied battery products with an initial estimated capacity of 200 units per annum. During the same year, the company got into a collaboration arrangement with NIFE Sweden. It expanded its production by including lead acid batteries in the factory based at Lalgudi in Rangareddy district of Andhra Pradesh.

Business operations

HBL Power Systems designs, develops and produces specialised batteries and DC systems in India. The company's product portfolio includes various types of batteries including nickel cadmium, lead acid, lithium and silver zinc. It also offers electronic solutions such as railway electronics, defence electronics, and thyristor control rectifiers.

The company has five major manufacturing facilities located in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Its global reach extends to over 50 countries. The company has a team strength of 1,720 professionals, as of March 31, 2023.

The company has established its international market presence through subsidiaries in the USA called HBL America which is located in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, to provide commercial and technical support to the company’s US representative and expand the customer base. HBL America Inc. supplies both lead-acid and nickel-cadmium batteries for backup power in critical applications in aviation, telecom, industrial manufacturing, oil and gas production and utility and railway sectors.

The company also has a joint venture collaboration with Gulf Battery Company LLC in Saudi Arabia to manufacture specialised batteries under the brand name HBL Power Systems. HBL is also present in continental Europe, the UK and a few other countries through their sales and marketing offices.

Within the industrial batteries segment, HBL Power Systems Limited is the only Indian company offering high-powered pure lead thin plate (PLT) batteries. In the defence and aviation electronics segment, it has established itself as a key supplier of batteries for diverse defence applications and first introduced the Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) for Indian Railways. The company holds the distinction of being the world's second-largest manufacturer of nickel-cadmium (NCPP) batteries featuring pocket plate, sintered plate and fibre plate technologies. It has also adopted Lithium-Ion battery technology for defence purposes.
