Torrent Power Limited is a prominent player in the power sector. The company is primarily engaged in electricity generation, transmission and distribution. The company has a portfolio of coal-based, gas-based and renewable energy power plants with a total generation capacity of 4110 MW. The company has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Maharashtra Government for three pumped storage hydro projects of 5,700 MW capacity.
Torrent Power is also engaged in the business of manufacturing and supply of power cables. It is among the market leaders in the high transmission (HT) power cable segment with a manufacturing capability of up to 132 kV XLPE cables. The company is also the country's first entity to get ISO 90001:2000 certification in the cable industry.
Torrent Power Limited's market capitalisation stood at nearly ₹57,200 crore as of February 8, 2024. Torrent Power share price has surged over 269% in the last three years.
Torrent Power business operations
Torrent Power Ltd was incorporated as Torrent Power Trading Pvt. Ltd in 2004. It was renamed to Torrent Power Private Ltd the following year before being converted into a public company in 2006. It also bagged the distribution franchise for Bhiwandi Circle of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) the same year. The company began the distribution project in Bhiwandi in 2007.
In FY 2009, Torrent Power secured the distribution franchise for the Agra and Kanpur distribution circle for 20 years. The company also commenced work on Phase I of its transmission system -- 26 km Loop in Loop out (LILO) of Vapi-Jhanor.
The company began operation of its 1147.5 MW Sugen Mega Power Project on August 15, 2009. The same year, Torrent Power also commissioned the second phase of the power transmission line (80 km Double Circuit 400 kV transmission lines) i.e. Gandhar-Dehgam Loop in Loop out (LILO) at Sugen.
The company signed a shareholders agreement with GPCL for setting up a 1000+ MW coal-based plant at Pipavav in Amreli district of Gujarat.
In FY 2011, the company, through its subsidiary, began work on the third and final phase of the 144.5 km, 400 kV Double Circuit line, part of the transmission infrastructure from the SUGEN Generating Station to the Pirana sub-station of PGCILl. It also started the operation of the distribution franchise for Agra Circle.
The next year, Torrent Power commissioned its first wind power plant at Lalpur in Gujarat's Jamnagar district.
The company upgraded its 110 MW coal-based E station of AMGEN in Ahmedabad to 121 MW. In 2014-15, the company commissioned its 1200 MW DGEN Power Project at Dahej SEZ, District Bharuch, Gujarat.
The company secured a distribution licence for the Dholera Special Investment Region in FY 2018-19. It also won the distribution franchise for areas covering approximately 65 sq km in the Thane urban circle.
Torrent Power acquired a 51% stake in the equity Share Capital of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Power Distribution Corporation Limited in FY 2022.
