JSW Energy Limited, a part of the conglomerate JSW Group, is one of the country’s leading power companies. The company is engaged in power generation, transmission and trading. JSW Energy also has a significant presence in the mining sector.

The Mumbai-headquartered company presently generates 6,677 MW of power across thermal, hydro and wind power segments. Majority of the total power generation capacity comes from thermal power, which stands at 3,158 MW.

The company has a presence in 10 states of the country and owns stakes in natural resource companies in South Africa.

JSW Energy was incorporated as a joint venture between JSW Steel and Tractebel SA, Belgium, in March 1994. It was named Jindal Tractebel Power Company Limited and started commercial operation in 2000 with a 2x130 MW plant at Toranagallu in Karnataka. The company was rechristened Jindal Thermal Power Company on November 17, 2002, and subsequently renamed JSW Energy on December 7, 2005.

A year later, as part of diversifying its operations, JSW Energy launched JSW Power Trading Company (JSW PTC).

Then in 2008, JSW Energy and JSW Steel signed a Joint Venture Agreement with Japan’s Toshiba Corporation to form the equipment manufacturing firm Toshiba JSW Power System Private Limited.

JSW Energy launched its initial public offering (IPO) towards the end of 2009 and the company was listed on the stock exchanges on January 4, 2010.

JSW Energy’s market capitalisation stood at more than ₹67,600 crore as of January 2, 2024. JSW Energy share price has surged more than 500% in the last three years.

Business Operations

The company is a major player in both conventional and renewable energy segments. In FY23, the company’s net generation went up to 21,866 MUs as compared to 20,787 MUs in FY22. It raised its installed generation capacity by 44% from 4,559 MW in FY 22 to 6,564 MW in FY23, after the acquisition of 1,753 MW of renewable energy assets from Mytrah Energy (India).

JSW now has an under-construction capacity of 3,206 MW, of which wind power constitutes 2,266 MW. Thermal power (700 MW) and hydro power (240 MW) make up the rest.

The company’s major thermal power plants are located at Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri (comprising four units of 300 MW each, and fully commissioned in 2011) and Rajasthan’s Barmer (comprising eight 135 MW units). It has hydel power plants in Vijaynagar of Karnataka (comprising two separate business units, with a combined capacity of 860MW), Karcham Wangtoo Pradesh), and Baspa (with a generating capacity of 300 MW) in Himachal Pradesh,

The power trading arm JSW PTC has a category "IV" licence from the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC).

Toshiba JSW Power System Private Limited has a state-of-the-art heavy engineering manufacturing plant at Ennore in Tamil Nadu.

The company is also a major player in the mining sector. JSW Mining’s lignite plant in Barmer has obtained the rights to develop mines in Kapurdi and Jalipa, with the former having already started supplying.

JSW Energy also holds a majority stake in South African Coal Mining Holdings Limited (SACMH), that owns coal mines, washeries and railway sidings.

Financial highlights

Consolidated revenue from operations increased 27% to ₹10,331.81 crore in FY23 from ₹ 8,167.15 crore in FY22. Consolidated EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) increased to ₹3,817 crore in FY23. Its profit after tax (PAT) increased 15% year-on-year to ₹1,358 crore in FY23 from ₹1,180 crore in FY22. The company's earnings per share (EPS) dropped to ₹9.01 in FY23 as against ₹10.52 in FY22.
