SJVN, earlier known as Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam, is an Indian company that engages in hydroelectric power generation and transmission. Founded in 1988, it is headquartered in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The company is a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) with Mini Ratna status. It was incorporated as a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh.

SJVN is currently a listed company with a shareholder breakdown of 55% owned by the Government of India, 26.85% by the Government of Himachal Pradesh and the remaining 18.15% held by the FIIs, DIIs and the public. The market capitalisation of SJVN Limited is over ₹36,900 crore as of January 9, 2023. SJVN Limited share price has gained over 250% in the last three years.

Business operations

SJVN Limited started with a singular project and operates solely within one state. It has since commissioned eleven projects, amassing a total installed capacity of 2227 MW and a 123 km transmission line.

Currently, SJVN is involved in implementing or operating power projects across various states in India including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, Odisha, Mizoram and Madhya Pradesh, in addition to ventures in the neighbouring country of Nepal.

SJVN aims to become a 5000 MW company by 2023-24, a 25000 MW company by 2030 and a 50000 MW company by 2040. At present, SJVN's total project portfolio stands at 56,894.4 MW. Of this, 2151.5 MW is currently operational, 4378 MW is under construction, 12803 MW is in the pre-construction and S&I stage, while projects with a capacity of 37,562 MW are currently under allotment.

SJVN Limited's projects currently in operation include hydro and renewable energy ventures. Under the hydro category, Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station and Rampur Hydro Power Station in Himachal Pradesh contribute 1,912 MW to the overall capacity. In the renewable energy sector, several projects collectively contribute 179.5 MW, including Khirvire Wind Power Station in Maharashtra (47.6 MW), Sadla Wind Power Plant in Gujarat (50 MW), Charanka Solar PV Power Plant in Gujarat (5.6 MW), Solar PV Plant in NJHPS in HP (1.3 MW) and Parasan Solar Power Plant in Uttar Pradesh (75 MW).

A 400 kV transmission Line spanning 86 km from Sursand near the Nepal border to Muzaffarpur in Bihar is part of the transmission line initiatives and is also under operation. Overall, the projects under operation total 2091.5 MW, combining hydro, renewable and transmission line efforts.

SJVN Thermal Pvt. Ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SJVN Ltd. SJVN Arun 3 Power Development Company Pvt Ltd was established in Nepal as another wholly-owned subsidiary of SJVN Ltd on April 25, 2013. A third company, SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), is also part of the company's subsidiary portfolio.

The company also holds a 26% stake in the Cross Border Power Transmission Company Ltd (CPTC). CPTC operates as a joint venture between SJVN Ltd, IL&FS Energy Development Company Ltd (IEDCL), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). Primarily, the company focuses on establishing, operating, maintaining and transferring the Indian section of the Indo-Nepal cross border transmission line from Muzaffarpur to Dhalkebar.

Financial Highlights

SJVN Limited's revenue from operations for FY23 stood at ₹2,938.35 crore, up by 21.6%, as compared to ₹2,417 crore in FY22. The net profit after tax for the financial year 2022-23 was ₹1,359.30 crore compared to ₹989.80 crore during the previous year. The company's earnings per share (EPS) stood at ₹3.46 in FY23 compared to ₹2.52 in the previous financial year.
