HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd offers a range of individual and group insurance solutions across India. It was formed as a joint venture between Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited (HDFC Limited) and Abrdn plc, formerly Standard Life Aberdeen plc. It was incorporated in 2000.

The company’s portfolio comprises various insurance and investment products such as pension, savings, investment, annuity and health.

Business operations

In three years of its launch, HDFC Life completed 1 lakh policies and 10,000 individual agents. It also entered into distribution tie-ups with HDFC Bank and other banks. The next year, in 2004, the company launched unit-linked products.

In 2007, HDFC Life breached the mark of 5 lakh policies.

The company set up a wholly-owned subsidiary, HDFC Pension, in FY 2012 to operate its pension fund business under the National Pension System. The company introduced HDFC Life Credit Protect which offers term insurance coverage for retail loans.

HDFC Life attained profitability, earning ₹271 crore in profit during fiscal year 2012. In 2013, the first paid out its maiden dividend to its shareholders. From ₹20,000 crore in 2010, the company's total assets under management (AUM) crossed ₹50,000 crore in 2014. Two years later, the company's total premium collection crossed ₹16,000 mark crore.

HDFC Life established its first international subsidiary in the UAE, HDFC International, to manage the operation of its reinsurance business.

In 2017, HDFC Life launched its initial public offering (IPO). In 2020, the company introduced HDFC Life Group Poorna Suraksha, which focused on long-term coverage portability and customised underwriting and pricing.

During FY 22, HDFC Life completed the acquisition of 100% equity shares of Exide Life Insurance Co Ltd, making it a wholly owned subsidiary effective from January 1, 2022.

In 2021, the insurance firm introduced HDFC Life Systematic Retirement Plan, a deferred annuity plan, offering guaranteed income for life by paying premiums for a limited payment term option to choose a deferment period from 5 to 15 years.

HDFC Life's AUM reached ₹2,04,170 crore by the end of FY 2022. During FY 2022-23, the business of Exide Life Insurance Company Limited was merged into the company with effect from October 15, 2022.

The company’s market capitalisation stands at over ₹1.37 lakh crore as of December 21, 2023. HDFC Life share price has dropped 0.22% in the last three years.

In FY23, the company’s assets under management (AUM) stood at ₹2,38,782 crore as against ₹2,04,170 crore in FY22. Its earnings per share (EPS) increased to ₹6.38 in FY23 as against ₹5.91 in FY22.
