Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) is a public sector undertaking that operates as a provider of fixed-line telecommunication services in the cities of Delhi and Mumbai. The company’s business is divided into two segments: cellular services and basic and other services. Prepaid and postpaid plans, 3G data plans, 3G settings, mobile television, international calling, value-added services, mobile connection requests and mobile recharge are all included in MTNL’s mobile offerings.

Apart from cellular services, MTNL provides several other services including web hosting, industrial training, universal access numbers, leased circuits, toll-free services and virtual card calling. With a market capitalisation of over ₹2,700 crore as of January 30, 2024, MTNL is listed both on the BSE and the National Stock Exchange.

MTNL share price has risen over 230% in 3 years. The Government of India established MTNL on April 1, 1986, with the objective of improving the quality of telecom services. In addition to being the main supplier of fixed-line services in these two cities, MTNL also offers mobile services throughout Delhi, including outlying areas such as Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. The company also has operations in Mumbai, which includes districts under the jurisdiction of Thane Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai Mumbai Corporation and Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

Through joint ventures and subsidiaries, MTNL expands its telecom offerings. One such company is Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Ltd, which is a fully-owned overseas subsidiary. The company has a wholly-owned subsidiary in India called Millennium Telecom Ltd.

MTNL maintains a presence in Nepal through its joint venture, United Telecommunications Limited.

Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Limited (MTML)

MTML is a wholly-owned subsidiary of MTNL operating in Mauritius. The company is licenced to provide internet, mobile and international long-distance services. In Mauritius, MTML has amassed a clientele of more than 4 lakh. The company offers mobile services with a 2G/3G network that covers the entire island and 4G (LTE) coverage that reaches over 90% of the population. The company also recently acquired licence for 5G services in Mauritius.

Millennium Telecom Ltd (MTL)

Founded in February 2000, MTL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of MTNL with a focus on offering a range of ICT (information and communication technology) related services. Cloud services, Wi-Fi solutions, project one governance, managed services, turnkey ICT solutions, GIS-based services, capacity building and skill development are all included in MTL’s service offering.

MTNL STPI IT Services Ltd (MSITSL) MSITSL is a joint venture company established through a 50:50 partnership between software technology parks of India (STPI) and MTNL. It was incorporated on March 31, 2006. In Chennai, MSITSL has constructed the physical infrastructure of a Tier-III data centre using space that it leased from STPI.
