Shri Ram Fibres was established in 1970 and it was renamed as SRF Limited. It was initially focused on producing nylon tyre cord fabrics. In 1974, it established its first tyre cord fabrics plant in Manali, near Chennai. Three years later, in 1977, the company started the production of fishnet twines at its Manali plant. Over the years, the company ventured into different segments.
SRF Limited specialises in the production of industrial and speciality intermediates. Known for its R&D expertise, particularly in chemicals domains, the company holds a dominant position in various sectors in India.

In 1986, the company established its coated fabrics business and also launched SRF Finance, a wholly-owned subsidiary. Three years later, in 1989, SRF ventured into the fluorochemicals industry by starting refrigerant production at its Bhiwadi facility in Rajasthan.
The company underwent a transformation in 1990 when Shri Ram Fibres was rebranded as SRF. In 1995, SRF started the packaging films business by acquiring a BOPET film plant in Kashipur, India, from M/s Flowmore. This expansion continued with the acquisition of CEAT Ltd.'s nylon tyre cord division in Malanpur near Gwalior in 1995.
SRF went global in 1996 with its first international plant, SRF Overseas Limited, established in the Jebel AN Free Trade Zone, Dubai.
By 1997, the company sold its stake in SRF Finance to GE Capital (Mauritius) Investment Ltd, a subsidiary of GE Capital, the world's largest finance company.
The company started a new packaging films manufacturing facility in Indore in 2004. It expanded its portfolio by starting the commercial production of polyester industrial yarn in May 2009, with a capacity of 14,500 metric tonnes per annum. In 2012, SRF established its Dahej facility in Gujarat, sprawled over 293 acres. This facility is SRF's largest manufacturing unit to date. 2018 saw the closure of SRF Industex Belting (Pty) Limited, the South African subsidiary, due to operational viability concerns.
SRF ventured into Europe in 2020 with its bi-axially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET) film manufacturing facility in Hungary. In 2022, SRF Altech Limited was incorporated as a wholly-owned subsidiary, focusing on the manufacturing of aluminium foil.
