The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is India’s largest crude oil and natural gas company. The company is engaged in exploring, producing and supplying crude oil and natural gas across onshore and offshore fields.
ONGC is a government-owned Maharatna company that produces 70% of India’s domestic crude oil and 84% of natural gas.
With a strong domestic presence and overseas assets, ONGC plays a key role in fulfilling India’s energy needs. The company is expanding its operations into cleaner and renewable energy to decrease its dependency on fossils.
ONGC’s journey began in 1956, with the formation of the Oil and Natural Gas Directorate. It was converted into a commission in 1959, then incorporated as a public sector enterprise in 1994.
Over the years, the ONCG discovered major oil and gas fields and transformed India's energy landscape. Out of 9 producing basins of India, ONGC had discovered 8. They found the crude oil reserves in Gujarat, Assam, Rajasthan, Bombay, Bengal and many other regions in India.
ONGC formed ONGC Videsh Limited to expand its exploration activities overseas. It become one of the important segments contributing to the company’s growth.
As of now, ONGC’s business segments are divided into four major segments.
Oil Exploration and Production: It is the core revenue segment of the company. It explores, develops and produces crude oil and natural gas.
Offshore Operations: A large portion of the company’s output comes from offshore assets like Mumbai’s offshore basin.
ONGC Videsh: Through this subsidiary, ONGC invest in oil and gas assets across many countries to secure long-term energy supplies.
Renewable Energy: ONGC is slowly expanding into renewable energy, green hydrogen and low-carbon energy solutions.
In the year 2022, ONGC secured its position in the prestigious Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings. Also, the company was awarded the Global Oil Spill Management Award for managing oil spills.
In 2023, ONGC ranked 4th in India and 158th globally in the Fortune Global 500 list. The company is also honoured with the International Asian Oil and Gas Award.
Revenue: ONGC reported a consolidated revenue of ₹6,75,655.88 crore in FY25 vs ₹6,65,201.47 crore in FY24. It showed an increase of 1.57% on a yearly basis, reflecting decent growth.
Operating Profit: The company reported an operating profit of ₹52,397.86 crore in FY25 vs ₹73,629.21 crore in FY24. It showed a decrease of -28.83% on a year-on-year basis, indicating mild negative performance.
Net Profit: ONGC reported a net profit of ₹38,328.59 crore in FY25 compared to ₹55,273.15 crore in FY24. It showed a decrease of -30.65% on a yearly basis, indicating a decline in overall performance.
