Elecon Engineering Company Limited is one of India’s leading industrial equipment makers. It was founded by Ishwarbhai B Patel in 1951. In January, 1960, it was incorporated as a private company. Elecon Engineering was listed on BSE in 1962 and National Stock Exchange in 2006.

Business operations

Elecon Engineering specialises in providing power transmission solutions and manufacturing material handling equipment. It caters to sectors such as steel, fertilisers, cement, coal, lignite, iron ore mines, sugar and power stations in India and overseas.

Elecon's product range includes marine gearboxes for warships, vertical mill gearboxes, rolling mill pinion stands and sugar mill planetary drives. Elecon is one of Asia’s largest gearbox manufacturing companies. Apart from India, its products have gained significant customers in the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe, Americas and Africa.

The company has increased its expertise in producing custom gearboxes for steel mills, high-speed turbines and even naval aircraft carriers. Elecon Engineering now also has a dedicated workforce for a responsive after-sales service.

In 2010, the company acquired Benzlers-Radicon Group from David Brown Gear Systems. As a unit of Elecon Engineering Company Ltd, it is the country's third-largest material handling solutions provider. Operating through a vertically integrated model, Elecon offers comprehensive in-house capabilities including design, manufacturing, fabrication, component manufacturing and robust support systems.

The company has seen considerable growth in the last decade. Elecon has established the Bhanubhai Memorial Centre of Excellence (BMCE), a manufacturing plant aimed at elevating standards. The gear division of Elecon Engineering has doubled its manufacturing capacity in the last 10 years.

Elecon holds the distinction of being the first in India to manufacture advanced equipment for bulk material handling. Their product range is extensive, catering to virtually every industrial sector across the country.

Elecon operates primarily through three key divisions:

Power Transmission Solutions:

This division focuses on designing and producing a variety of equipment like parallel shafts, right angle shafts, helical and spiral bevel helical gears. These products serve sectors such as sugar, cement, chemical, fertilizer, steel, plastic extrusion and rubber industries.

Material Handling Equipment:

Under this division, Elecon manufactures a range of products including belt conveyors, stacker-cum-reclaimers, pusher cars, idlers and pulleys, barrel-type blender reclaimers and ship loaders.

Wind Power:

Elecon operates a unit in Vallabh Vidynagar, Gujarat, where the company manufactures wind turbines.

Beyond its computerised numerically controlled machines, Elecon also has sophisticated gear profile testing machines, a comprehensive testing and calibrating laboratory and vacuum spectrometers for rigorous chemical analysis of raw materials.

Elecon Engineering 's revenue from operations for the FY23 stood at ₹1,529.68 crore, up 26.2% from ₹1,211.94 crore in FY22. The net profit after tax for FY23 was ₹237.49 crore compared to ₹140.49 crore during the previous year. In FY23, the earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased to ₹338.88 crore from the previous year's ₹246.44 crore. The company's earnings per share (EPS) stood at ₹21.17 in FY23 compared to ₹12.52 in the previous financial year.
