Central Bank of India is a public sector bank that was founded in 1911. It was founded by Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala with Sir Ferozeshah Mehta, who was the first chairman of the bank. It is one of the leading public sector banks with a pan-India presence having branches in many states and Union Territories.

Central Bank of India was the first Indian commercial bank entirely owned and operated by Indians. In 1969, it was nationalised along with 13 other major commercial banks and is currently owned by the Government of India.

Today, the Central Bank of India is one of the most well-diversified banks in India. Its market capitalisation is ₹47,180 crore as of January 25, 2024. Central Bank share price has gained more than 300% in the last three years.

Business operations

Central Bank of India's services include savings accounts, deposits, mutual funds, debit and credit cards, NRI accounts, money transfer and remittance facilities. It also offers various loan options, senior citizen accounts and more. The bank further provides a range of products and services for corporates including corporate accounts, loans, RTGS, NEFT, CMS and others. Some of the most popular names on its list of major corporate clients are ICICI, IDBI, UTI, LIC and HDFC. It also has a strategic partnership with IIFL Home Finance Limited.

Central Bank of India has established itself in all 28 states and 7 of the 8 Union Territories.

Central Bank of India operates a vast network of 18,204 customer touchpoints across the country, as of March 31, 2023. This includes 4,493 branches, 3,752 ATMs and 9,959 Business Correspondent outlets. It also has a strong presence in rural and semi-urban areas. Around 65.21% of its branches are in these regions.

The bank collaborates with the state governments of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to sponsor 7 regional rural banks. It has also entered into agency agreements with the Life Insurance Corporation of India and The New India Assurance Company Limited to distribute insurance products.

Central Bank of India has established 48 financial literacy and credit counselling centres and 46 rural self employment training institutes in various states. These centres and institutions aim to improve rural financial literacy.

Central Bank of India holds significant shares in various subsidiaries and associates. It has a 64.4% stake in Cent Bank Home Finance Limited and fully owns Centbank Financial Services Limited. It also holds associate stakes of 35.00% each in Uttar Bihar Gramin Bank and Uttarbanga Kshetriya Gramin Bank. It has a 20.00% joint venture interest in Indo Zambia Bank Limited.
