Biocon Limited is an Indian biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Bengaluru and Bridgewater, New Jersey, in the U.S. The company was established in 1978 by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and manufactures generic active pharmaceutical ingredients sold in over 120 countries.

The company is involved in manufacturing novel biologics, biosimilar insulins and antibodies that are sold in India. Biocon’s formulations include metabolics, oncology, immunotherapy, and nephrology products.

Biocon Limited launched its IPO and went public in March 2004. The company raised ₹315 crore by issuing shares at ₹315 per share. The company is listed on both Indian stock exchanges, BSE and NSE.

History of Biocon Limited

Biocon Limited was founded in 1978 by Kiran Mazumdar and became the first indian company to manufacture and export enzymes to the US and European countries. In 1989, Biocon Biochemicals was acquired by Unilever and merged with its subsidiary, Quest International.

In 1998, Unilever sold its shareholdings to the Indian promoters, making Biocon an independent company. In the following years, the company became the first Indian company to get approved by the USFDA for manufacturing lovastatin. The company became an internationally acclaimed and recognised biopharmaceutical producer.
