Sun TV Network Limited is an Indian television broadcaster operating through the media and entertainment segment. It also has business interests in radio software programming. The company operates satellite television channels across six languages to viewers in India, Sri Lanka, Canada, South Africa, the Middle East, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. The company's flagship channel is Sun TV. It owns other channels like Surya TV, Gemini TV, Udaya TV, Sun Bangla and Sun Marathi.
The company is also the co-owner of the Indian Premier League franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Business operations
Sun TV Network, incorporated in 1985, originally started as a Tamil satellite channel before making forays into the Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi and Bengali languages. The network started operation as part of a time-sharing arrangement with ATN before becoming 24-channel in 1995. The company launched its first Malayalam channel Surya TV in 1998. Sun News, a news and current affairs-based channel, was also launched in 1998.
In 2002, the company introduced KTV, a 24-hour film-based Tamil channel. Two years later, Sun Music launched the first 24-hour Tamil music channel. In 2003, the company launched the first FM channel in Tamil.
The network introduced a 24-hour film and music channel in Malayalam under the name Kiran TV in 2005. In 2006, Sun TV Ltd launched 3 more FM radio stations, under the brand S FM.
Sun TV signed an exclusive Cable and satellite channels agreement with Nimbus Communications Ltd in 2007. The company through its subsidiary, South Asia FM Ltd (SAFL), entered into a strategic alliance with Red FM to further its radio broadcasting business in the North West and East Indian markets.
In 2008, Sun TV Network Ltd announced its entry into Film Production through its new division Sun Pictures.
Sun TV Network, in 2009, announced a restructuring of its distribution business and team with the creation of two verticals. One division focused on managing the South Indian operations and the international business. The second focused division on expanding the SUN TV bouquet into the North West and Eastern Markets of India.
Focusing on the international market, Sun TV Network, in 2010, appointed Global Media Management LLC and World Media Connect LLC to manage its distribution and advertising business respectively in North America.
In 2017, the company launched a new digital content platform Sun NXT offering TV programmes in Tamil Telugu Malayalam and Kannada.
The company started the transmission of a new Bengali general entertainment channel SUN Bangla in 2019.
Sun TV Network Ltd's market capitalisation was over ₹28,000 crore as of December 30, 2023. Sun TV share price has gained 47% in the last three years.
