If the Indian rupee continues to depreciate against the U.S dollar, crude oil imports will become expensive, leading to higher domestic diesel prices.

In Mumbai, diesel fuel is a refined fuel oil used in a wide range of engines. It is used to power trucks, buses, trains, ships, along with construction, farm and military vehicles. It also fuels diesel-powered electricity generators in factories, hospitals, and remote areas, and powers industrial equipment for power generation.

Diesel fuel is refined from crude oil and from biomass materials. Crude oil is made up of various chains of hydrogen and carbon, the length of these chains varies. The longer the hydrocarbon chain, the higher the boiling point. The longest chain has a boiling point of over 400 degrees Celsius. Shorter hydrocarbon chains have low boiling points. This difference in boiling points helps separate various distillates from crude oil.

When the crude oil is heated, long hydrocarbon chains vaporise and enter a fractional distillation tower. It has a density of around 0.83-0.95 g/cm3 and a boiling range of approximately 160-360 degrees Celsius with a boiling flash point above 52 degrees Celsius. Diesel fuel's ignition quality is measured by the Cetane Number/Index.

Compared to petrol and gasoline, diesel is denser, oilier and heavier with longer hydrocarbon chains. Diesel oil has a higher boiling point than petrol and gasoline.
