Diesel Rate Today in Kolkata

The transportation and agriculture industries contribute to nearly 40% of total petroleum product consumption in India. Demand for diesel often surges during festive seasons and reached around 8.55 million tonnes in November 2025. Diesel is the most consumed fuel in India and forms a large part of the country's energy collection.

Let's explore factors that influence diesel prices in Kolkata.

In April 2025, the central government set a ₹10 per litre excise duty on diesel, which includes basic excise duty and other cess or surcharges. The state governments levy Value Added Tax (VAT) or sales tax on diesel and other petroleum products, as they are not included in the GST regime. This adds to diesel fuel's final price, increasing the cost for the end consumer. The tax collected is used to fund development projects that benefit the general public.

Diesel prices in Kolkata were deregulated and became linked to the import/export balance post-2014. However, the central government uses excise duty changes to control diesel prices, especially during high spikes in international crude oil prices. This helps the government to stabilise diesel prices by managing price volatility for consumers and the overall economy.

Until 2014, the Indian government regulated diesel prices by offering subsidies but now diesel prices are deregulated, making them market-linked. This allows oil marketing companies to revise fuel prices daily based on market volatility, exposing the domestic market to international price volatility.

India primarily imports crude oil from Russia, which makes up around 40% of India's crude oil imports. The imported crude oil is then refined in India and sold to European and other countries since the EU has banned all refined petroleum products from Russia. This ban benefits India since we have a massive refining capacity and major global exporter of refined petroleum products. However, if global crude oil prices rise, India will be significantly impacted, leading to an increase in domestic diesel prices.

Crude oil prices in Kolkata are highly sensitive to supply and demand dynamics, geopolitical events such as conflicts, sanctions etc, and production decisions by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Strong economic development in countries such as China and India increases oil demand, leading to a rise in fuel prices. Similarly, during global economic downturns or increased supply can lead to a fall in fuel prices. Currently, the U.S is the world's biggest producer of crude oil, followed by Saudi Arabia and Russia while India is a leading refiner of crude oil and exporter of diesel.

Another major macroeconomic factor that impacts diesel prices is inflation. Crude oil is traded internationally in U.S dollars, hence the exchange rate plays a big role in diesel price fluctuations. If the Indian rupee continues to depreciate against the U.S dollar, crude oil imports will become expensive, leading to higher domestic diesel prices.

Diesel prices directly impact the transport industry as it is an essential component since it is used in trucks, buses, ships, trains, construction and farm vehicles. Diesel prices fluctuate due to multiple factors such as demand and supply dynamics, changes in excise duty, state taxes, global crude oil prices, inflation and other macroeconomic factors. These fluctuations impact transportation costs and logistics and supply chains.

Increased diesel prices impact the profitability of transport companies, the increased cost of diesel is passed off to end users by increasing the cost of goods being transported. When diesel prices are high, companies can adjust their pricing strategies or find more cost-efficient routes to mitigate the increased costs.

As diesel price fluctuations are unpredictable, many companies seek sustainable options that aren't dependent on diesel and other fuels. More companies are adopting electric or hybrid trucks to reduce their reliance on fuel and lower their emissions. Sustainable alternatives will not only provide additional cost savings but also environmental benefits.

In Kolkata, diesel fuel is a refined fuel oil used in a wide range of engines. It is used to power trucks, buses, trains, ships, along with construction, farm and military vehicles. It also fuels diesel-powered electricity generators in factories, hospitals, and remote areas, and powers industrial equipment for power generation.

Diesel fuel is refined from crude oil and from biomass materials. Crude oil is made up of various chains of hydrogen and carbon, the length of these chains varies. The longer the hydrocarbon chain, the higher the boiling point. The longest chain has a boiling point of over 400 degrees Celsius. Shorter hydrocarbon chains have low boiling points. This difference in boiling points helps separate various distillates from crude oil.

When the crude oil is heated, long hydrocarbon chains vaporise and enter a fractional distillation tower. As the vapor rises, collects at the distillation plates and cools down, it reaches a certain temperature, the hydrocarbon chains return to their liquid form. When the vapors cool down below 370 degrees Celsius, they become fuel oil. This is collected from distillation plates and pumped into the diesel tanks.

Diesel fuel is a yellowish to dark liquid with a petroleum smell. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons such as alkanes, cycloalkanes and aromatics from crude oil's distillation process. It has a density of around 0.83-0.95 g/cm3 and a boiling range of approximately 160-360 degrees Celsius with a boiling flash point above 52 degrees Celsius. Diesel fuel's ignition quality is measured by the Cetane Number/Index.

Compared to petrol and gasoline, diesel is denser, oilier and heavier with longer hydrocarbon chains. Diesel oil has a higher boiling point than petrol and gasoline. Due to these physical differences, diesel offers more energy per volume and ignites more slowly, making it suitable for heavy-duty vehicles.
