Samvardhana Motherson Intl

Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd (SAMIL), formerly known as Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd, is the world’s largest manufacturer of components for the automotive and transport industries. It is also the world’s largest supplier to automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Besides that, the group serves a range of customers in non-automotive businesses as well.

Motherson has a broad product portfolio, making it a full-system solutions provider for many customers in different industries. Its business divisions include wiring harness, vision systems, modules and polymer products, elastomers, precision metals and modules, technology and industrial solutions, logistics solutions, lighting and electronics, aerospace, health and services.

The company was incorporated in 1975 by current chairman Vivek Chaand Sehgal and his late mother Swaran Lata Sehgal, as a small wire-making company. In 1977, the company set up its first cable factory.

The flagship company of the Motherson Group, Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd (MSSL), was listed on the Indian stock exchanges in 1993.

In 1999, the company opened its first overseas office in Europe. The real global expansion happened in the first decade of the 21st century. Between 2002 and 2007, there were six acquisitions, of which five were from Europe. In this period, Motherson expanded to Singapore, Mauritius, Ireland, Sri Lanka, UK, USA, UAE, Germany, Czech Republic. Now, it has become a $12.7 billion group, with a presence in 41 countries across five continents.

In 2022, Motherson was restructured with the objective of creating value for all stakeholders. There are two listed companies under the Motherson umbrella -- Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd and Motherson Sumi Wiring India Ltd.

Business operations

Motherson Group serves its customers with multiple products and services through its 12 business divisions – of which three major divisions of the group are wiring harness, vision systems and modules and polymer products which contribute more than 95% to the group revenues:

Wiring Harness:

The Wiring Harness division of Motherson is a full-service system supplier with complete in-house design, development and manufacturing capability. It is one of the most vertically integrated business divisions with a product range promoting technological advancement across the automotive and non-automotive sectors it supplies to.

Vision Systems:

Motherson is a leading global supplier of vision systems to the automotive industry, and the product range includes interior mirrors, exterior mirrors and camera-based detection, which it supplies to almost all major OEMs.

Modules and Polymer Product:

The division encompasses the largest business line in Motherson. It develops and produces a highly diversified product range from simple plastic parts to highly integrated systems and modules, supplying to OEMs globally.

Financial Highlights

Revenue: In 2022-23, the company reported its highest yearly revenue from operation amounting ₹78,700.7 crore against ₹63,774 crore in 2021-22, representing a 23.4% change. Total EBITDA ended at ₹6,394 crore in FY23, with a margin of 8.1% (up from 7.6% in FY22). Net profit for the financial year was at ₹1,495.6 crore as compared to the previous year’s net profit of ₹509.6 crore. The company approved payment of a dividend of ₹0.65 per share (of face value of ₹1 each) on the share capital of the company for the financial year ended March 31, 2023, to equity shareholders.
