Tonbo Imaging India is a Bengaluru-based defence electronics OEM that designs, develops and manufactures sensing, processing, communication and guidance systems for surveillance, reconnaissance, targeting and control.
Incorporated in 2003 as Sarnoff Innovative Technologies Private Limited, it evolved from providing R&D and intellectual-property development services into a defence-focused product company following a promoter buyout in 2012. Its products include thermal-imaging cores, weapon sights, binoculars, targeting and fire-control systems, missile seekers and guidance systems.
Tonbo operates an asset-light, horizontally integrated model. Core product architecture, optics, embedded software, electronics, system integration and intellectual property are controlled in-house, while volume production is outsourced to certified electronics manufacturing services partners, principally Kaynes Technology India Limited and Avalon Technology and Services Private Limited. Prototype development, optical and electronic assembly, system integration and qualification testing remain internal. This structure limits investment in large manufacturing facilities, but makes execution dependent on external manufacturers and their quality and delivery systems.
The portfolio is organised principally into tactical systems and platform systems, with directed-energy products still under development. Tactical systems include handheld and weapon-mounted thermal imagers, binoculars, targeting devices, driver-vision systems and 360-degree situational-awareness products. Platform systems comprise EO/IR payloads, stabilised gimbals, fire-control systems and missile seekers integrated into ground vehicles, aircraft, UAVs, naval platforms and weapon stations. Directed-energy development centres on the WaveStrike high-power microwave system for counter-drone applications; the company had not recognised revenue from this category as of June 30, 2026.
The revenue mix is shifting toward platform products. Tactical systems contributed ₹211.68 crore, or 58.3% of FY26 revenue, compared with 77.2% in FY25 and 83.9% in FY24. Platform-system revenue increased to ₹144.81 crore, or 39.9%, in FY26 from ₹101.05 crore, or 21.5%, in FY25 and ₹12.70 crore, or 2.9%, in FY24. In Q1FY27, tactical and platform systems contributed 59.5% and 39.2%, respectively. This indicates greater platform diversification, although tactical systems remain the largest revenue category.
Customers include global militaries, Indian and foreign government agencies, law-enforcement and homeland-security bodies, system integrators and defence OEMs. Tonbo had deployed more than 28,000 systems across 24 countries as of June 30, 2026. Its confirmed order book was ₹314.24 crore, comprising ₹231.87 crore from 30 domestic orders and ₹82.37 crore from six overseas orders; it received a further ₹118.15 crore of orders between July 1 and September 30, 2026. Customer concentration remains material: the top five customers generated 53% of FY26 revenue, while the largest customer contributed 13.7%; in Q1FY27, those figures were 92% and 54.7%, respectively. Tonbo’s Bengaluru R&D centre employed 130 engineers, approximately 38% of its 339-person workforce, as of June 30, 2026. R&D expenditure increased from ₹4.24 crore in FY24 to ₹25.86 crore in FY26 and represented 8.6% of FY26 expenses.
Geographic exposure has changed sharply. Export revenue accounted for 48.6% of revenue in FY24 and 65.5% in FY25, but declined to 5.5% in FY26 and 0.2% in Q1FY27. India consequently contributed 93% of FY26 revenue and 98.5% in Q1FY27. The FY26 decline partly reflected the absence of repeat European orders and delays caused by the West Asia conflict. Tonbo also has wholly owned subsidiaries in Armenia and Australia for customer support and electro-optics activities.
The global defence-electronics demand rose from $60.7 billion in CY20 to $232.1 billion in CY30 at a 14.4% CAGR, while India’s market is projected to expand from $3.2 billion to $17.6 billion at an 18.6% CAGR. The global EO/IR market is forecast to reach $14.4 billion by CY30, while India’s EO/IR market is projected at $1.4 billion, supported by surveillance, UAV, thermal-imaging and indigenous-procurement requirements.
Tonbo participates through tactical imagers, platform EO/IR payloads, seekers and emerging counter-drone systems; its owned IP, IDDM eligibility and increased platform mix provide relevant exposure, but benefits depend on tender wins, execution and component availability rather than industry growth alone.
Tonbo acquired a portfolio of optics, imaging, machine-learning, sensor-fusion and stabilisation IP from CEAQ Singapore in March 2024 for ₹183.19 crore; it also owns five US patent registrations and has filed additional Indian and US applications. The company’s medium-term strategy includes further platform-system development, loitering munitions, remote weapon stations, high-altitude reconnaissance systems, HPM counter-drone technology, OEM partnerships and geographic expansion. These programmes enlarge the addressable market, but commercialisation, qualification and procurement timing remain uncertain.
Now, Tonbo Imaging India is launching its initial public offering (IPO), which consists of an offer for sale of ₹852 crore only. Its shares will be listed on the NSE and BSE.
