The company was formed on September 6, 1954, in Mumbai through a partnership between Tata Sons and the Switzerland-based Volkart Brothers. Voltas is one of India's largest air conditioning companies. Voltbek Home Appliances Private Limited (Voltbek) is a joint venture, equally shared between Voltas and Araelik - a major household appliance manufacturer in Europe. This partnership has empowered Voltas by tapping into Arçelik’s R&D capabilities and merging them with Voltas’ expansive distribution network. This has made Voltas Beko one of India's fastest-growing brands.

Under the Voltas Beko brand, more than 3.3 million units of home appliances including refrigerators, washing machines, microwaves, and dishwashers have been sold.

During the financial year 2022-23, the company finalised the Business Transfer Agreement (BTA) to transfer its B2B businesses. The agreement was signed with its wholly-owned subsidiary, Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Limited (UMPESL). UMPESL is a platform through which Voltas offers multiple engineering solutions.
