What are the mandatory statutory charges levied by the government for trading in different segments?
When you place an order on Upstox, you may incur brokerage and other applicable charges. Here’s a simple breakdown to help you understand them.
Types of charges
Upstox fees
Brokerage: Brokerage is a fee charged by Upstox for each executed order placed.
Charges Levied by Government or Intermediaries (Statutory/Regulatory Requirement)
1. STT/CTT: Securities Transaction Tax and Commodity Transaction Tax is a direct tax levied by the government on transactions and it varies as per the segments.
2. Transaction charges: These charges are levied by the exchanges like BSE, NSE & MCX and are also called Exchange fees or Exchange turnover charges.
3. GST: This is the tax levied by the government on the services rendered and currently is 18% (on brokerage + transaction charges + SEBI fees + DP charges).
4. SEBI charges: These charges are levied by SEBI across all segments.
6. Stamp duty: Stamp duty is charged by the government and now the rates are uniform across the states. This tax is applicable only on buy orders.
7. IPFT(NSE): Investor protection Fund trust charges are levied by NSE on Equity(Delivery, Intraday), Futures &Options and currency Futures &Options.
8. DP Charges: DP transaction charges are levied by CDSL on all 'Sell' transactions from your Demat holdings (Equity Delivery). They are charged once per scrip per day. DP charges will be calculated as per your DP plan.
Note: Within the contract note, 'STT - DEL' signifies Securities Transaction Tax charges applicable to delivery transactions, while 'STT - SQUP' indicates Securities Transaction Tax charges for intraday transactions. Charges that have been rounded will be denoted as 'STT-RND'

Note:
- DP charges apply when selling stocks under equity delivery.
- From now on, IPFT charges will be combined with Transaction Charges.
