Know more about a Demat Account

Everything you need to know about opening a Demat Account

A demat account is an account that stores your financial securities in electronic form. The term Demat stands for dematerialisation, which means converting physical share certificates into a digital format.

A demat account allows investors to hold shares, bonds, exchange-traded funds, mutual funds, and other securities securely without the need for physical certificates. To buy and sell securities in the stock market, you need both a demat account and a trading account.

Opening a demat account online has made investing easier, faster, and more accessible for everyone. Learn what a Demat Account is and how it works

What is a Demat Account?

A demat account is broadly classified into four types:

  • Regular Demat Account: This standard demat account is designed for resident Indian investors to hold and manage securities electronically. Apart from the regular demat account, there are non-individual demat accounts which can be opened by Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), Limited Liability Partnership firms (LLP), and corporates.
  • Basic Service Demat Account (BSDA): This is a special type of demat account designed for retail investors with small portfolios. Holdings up to ₹4 lakh have zero annual maintenance charges.
  • Repatriable Demat Account: This demat account is suitable for NRIs investing through foreign funds, allowing earnings abroad transfer.
  • Non-Repatriable Demat Account: This demat account allows NRI investments, but funds and earnings remain within India.

To open a demat account online, you need a few essential documents. The demat account opening process at Upstox is completely digital and hassle-free.

The documents required for opening a demat account are:

  • PAN Card: It is a mandatory document required for identity verification and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Aadhaar Card: It is used for address verification and online e-KYC. To complete the digital eKYC, your mobile number must be linked with Aadhaar.
  • Bank Account Details: It is required to link your bank account for fund transfers and settlements.
  • Income Proof for F&O: Income proof is needed only if you want to activate F&O, commodity and currency segments.

You can open a demat account in just a few simple steps. The entire process takes only a few minutes and can be completed using your smartphone or computer.

Step 1: Visit the Upstox website and click on Open Demat Account or download the Upstox app.

Step 2: Register using your mobile number and email ID.

Step 3: Enter your basic details and upload your PAN Card and Aadhaar Card.

Step 4: Add and verify bank details. This bank account will be linked to your trading and demat account for fund transfer.

Step 5: Complete the e-KYC process and add nominee details. (Users can either add a nominee or opt out of nomination).

Step 6: Finish selfie verification and complete e-sign using the Aadhaar OTP.

Step 7: Once verification is successful, your demat account will be activated, and you will receive a welcome letter from Upstox.
