Trent Limited was founded in 1998, initially known as Lakme Limited, which was founded in 1952. Lakme primarily focused on manufacturing, selling, and exporting cosmetic products.

However, in 1998, decide to divest its cosmetics business and venture into retailing due to a lack of established brands in many categories. This led Lakme to venture into the apparel industry and soft goods retail market by launching a chain of departmental stores nationwide.

Over the years, Trent slowly expanded its footprint, adapting to changing consumer preferences. Trent diversified into the value chain with Zudio, food and grocery retail through Star Bazaar.

With disciplined execution, efficient sourcing and a strong brand name, Trend has emerged as one of India’s fastest growing and most profitable retail companies.

• In 2004, Trent entered into hyper market business with the launch of Star India Bazaar.
• In 2005, Trent acquired a majority stake in Landmark Limited, a retailer of books, music and toys.
• In 2009, Trent entered into a joint venture with Inditex Group from Spain to launch the global fashion chain “Zara” stores in India.
• In 2011, the company expanded its partnership with Inditex Group to bring the premium clothing brand Massimo Dutti to India.
• In 2014, Tesco acquired 50% stake in Trent Hypermarket.
