Trent Limited is a retail company founded in 1998. A part of the Tata Group, it is headquartered in Mumbai. Trent runs various types of retail stores including department stores, hypermarkets, supermarkets and speciality stores across India.
The company, initially known as Lakme Limited (Lakme), was founded on December 5, 1952. Lakme primarily focused on manufacturing, selling and exporting cosmetics, toiletries and perfumery products. However, in 1998, Lakme decided to divest its cosmetics business and venture into apparel retailing due to the lack of established brands in many categories. This led Lakme to venture into the apparel and soft goods retail market by launching a chain of departmental stores nationwide.
Lakme acquired Littlewoods International (India) Private Limited (LIIPL) from Littlewoods International Limited, UK. in March 1998. LIIPL specialises in retailing readymade garments and related merchandise. Lakme Exports Limited, a Lakme subsidiary, merged with LIIPL later, forming the entity named Trent Limited.
The market capitalisation of Trent Limited is over ₹1,08,000 crore as of January 6, 2024. Trent share price has gained over 350% over the past three years.
Business operations
Trent Limited's business areas include Westside which offer a wide range of clothing, footwear and accessories.
Star Bazaar, a hypermarket chain, provides a diverse range of products. Star stores are mainly operated by Trent Hypermarket Private Limited (THPL), a joint venture split evenly at 50 percent between Trent Ltd and Tesco Plc UK.
The portfolio includes hypermarket and supermarket stores that focus on various categories such as food and groceries, home care, apparel, home décor and health and beauty products.
Presently, it consists of 63 stores in 10 cities- Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Nashik, Kolhapur, Vadodara and Solapur.
The Star business focuses on a store concept that offers a curated selection of fresh produce, groceries, exclusive brands, FMCG products and home care within a space ranging from 18,000 to 20,000 square feet.
Landmark, a leader in books and music, offers a wide selection of titles in books and music, along with movies, toys, gift items and stationery. Another part of Trent Limited, Fashion Yatra focuses on bringing quality fashion at affordable prices to value-conscious customers in towns across India.
Trent Limited has many subsidiaries and associates of which the most famous are Zara and Massimo Dutti. The company has two distinct partnerships with Spain's Inditex group, holding shares at a ratio of 51 per cent (Inditex) to 49 per cent (Trent). One partnership oversees the operation of Zara stores, while the other manages Massimo Dutti stores in India. These entities primarily handle the distribution of Zara and Massimo Dutti products in India through their respective store networks.
Currently, the Zara Stores entity operates 20 stores spread across 11 cities in India. The Massimo Dutti entity runs 3 stores in 2 Indian cities – Mumbai and Delhi.
Financial Highlights
Trent Limited's revenue from operations for FY23 stood at ₹8,242 crore, up 83.2% from ₹4,498 crore in FY22. The net profit after tax for 2022-23 was ₹393.7 crore compared to ₹34.6 crore during the previous year. The company's earnings per share (EPS) stood at ₹12.5 in FY23 compared to ₹3 in the previous financial year.
