About Trent

Trent Limited is a retail company founded in 1998. A part of the Tata Group, it is headquartered in Mumbai. Trent runs various types of retail stores including department stores, hypermarkets, supermarkets and speciality stores across India.

The company, initially known as Lakme Limited (Lakme), was founded on December 5, 1952. Lakme primarily focused on manufacturing, selling and exporting cosmetics, toiletries and perfumery products. However, in 1998, Lakme decided to divest its cosmetics business and venture into apparel retailing due to the lack of established brands in many categories. This led Lakme to venture into the apparel and soft goods retail market by launching a chain of departmental stores nationwide.

Lakme acquired Littlewoods International (India) Private Limited (LIIPL) from Littlewoods International Limited, UK. in March 1998. LIIPL specialises in retailing readymade garments and related merchandise. Lakme Exports Limited, a Lakme subsidiary, merged with LIIPL later, forming the entity named Trent Limited.

The market capitalisation of Trent Limited is over ₹1,08,000 crore as of January 6, 2024. Trent share price has gained over 350% over the past three years.

The Star business focuses on a store concept that offers a curated selection of fresh produce, groceries, exclusive brands, FMCG products and home care within a space ranging from 18,000 to 20,000 square feet.

Landmark, a leader in books and music, offers a wide selection of titles in books and music, along with movies, toys, gift items and stationery. Another part of Trent Limited, Fashion Yatra focuses on bringing quality fashion at affordable prices to value-conscious customers in towns across India.

The company has two distinct partnerships with Spain's Inditex group, holding shares at a ratio of 51 per cent (Inditex) to 49 per cent (Trent). One partnership oversees the operation of Zara stores, while the other manages Massimo Dutti stores in India.
