Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd is an electricity transmission utility with a Maharatna status. The Government of India holds a 51.34% share in the company while the remaining 48.66% is held by public shareholders.
The public sector entity was set up on October 23, 1989, under the Company Act as the National Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. It was assigned the responsibility of constructing and operating high-voltage transmission systems in India. The National Power Transmission Corporation was renamed as Power Grid Corporation of India in October 1992.
Power Grid was listed on the Indian stock exchanges in 2007 and on the Singapore exchange in 2013. It was conferred Navratna status in 2008. In 2009, it set up the National Load Dispatch Centre in New Delhi, while in 2012 it set up a transmission network for the first ultra mega power project.
Power Grid operates 176,180 circuit km of extra high voltage (EHV) transmission lines in India. It owns 275 extra high voltage AC & HVDC substations with a more than 512,601 MVA transformation capacity across India. The company operates 86% of inter-regional networks.
In addition to the transmission business, the company has also diversified into the telecom business.
Power Grid also provides consultancy services in power transmission, sub-transmission, load dispatch & communication, distribution management and other areas to domestic and international customers.
Business operations
The company has fixed assets of ₹2.7 lakh crore. The market valuation of Power Grid reached around ₹2.17 lakh crore in 2023 as of December 19. Power Grid share price has zoomed over 120% in three years.
The company is involved in mainly three segments:
Transmission
Power Grid is a leading transmission services provider in India. It operates around 1,76,343 cubic km of transmission lines and has 275 sub-stations. Power Grid is a major transmission utility in the world. It has played a key role in the development of the Indian power sector. It was instrumental in setting up a strong National Grid in India and that has been augmented regularly to facilitate power transmission requirements with reliability. The National Grid has an inter-regional power transfer capacity of 112,250 MW.
Telecom Vertical
The company is also involved in the telecom business. The PSU provides back-bone connectivity to all metros, big cities and towns and remote areas. Its wholly-owned subsidiary Power Grid Teleservices Limited gives services under the PowerTel brand. It is the only telecom service provider with a pan-India overhead optic fibre network.
The PSU is one of the implementing agencies for the BharatNet project. Power Grid is developing the national optical fibre network in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, Odisha and Himachal Pradesh.
Consultancy
Power Grid also provides consultancy services in areas such as power transmission, sub-transmission system, distribution management and load dispatch & communications in India and abroad.
Being one of the largest power transmission utilities in the world, consulting services have been provided to several customers globally.
Financial Highlights
Power Grid reported consolidated revenue from operations of ₹45,581.28 crore in FY23 against ₹41,621.64 crore in FY22, up by 9.5%. Expenses were ₹29,070.47 crore in FY23 against ₹25,957.32 crore in FY22, up by 11%. Profit before tax stood at ₹17,453.05 crore in FY23 against ₹20,139.38 crore in FY22, down by 13%. Net profit of the company dropped to ₹15,417.12 crore in FY23 compared to ₹16,824 crore in FY22. The earnings per share was ₹22.10 per share in FY23 against ₹24.12 per share in FY22.
