Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) Limited is an Indian chemicals company. The company was established in 1943 as India's first large-scale fertiliser plant in Kochi, Kerala. Operations began in 1947 under private ownership by M/s. Seshasayee Brothers.

It became a public sector company in 1960 and the government of India became the primary shareholder in 1962. FACT operates under the Department of Fertilizers, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers.

Business Operations

The Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited produces a variety of items including fertilisers, petrochemicals and chemicals. The company's product lineup consists of finished goods such as ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate/complex fertilisers, caprolactam and biofertilisers. It exports caprolactam and ammonium sulfate, while its byproducts include nitric acid, soda ash, gypsum and carbon dioxide gas. It also manufactures intermediary products like ammonia, synthesis gas, sulfuric acid, oleum and phosphoric acid.

FACT initiated ammonium sulphate production in 1947, with an installed capacity of 10,000 MT nitrogen. Recognising the need for indigenous expertise in vital areas like engineering, design and consultancy for establishing modern fertiliser plants, FACT Engineering and Design Organisation (FEDO) was founded on July 24, 1965. FEDO has expanded its services into chemicals, petrochemicals, hydrometallurgy, pharmaceuticals and other verticals. Its services include project evaluation, plant design, procurement, project management, on-site supervision, commissioning of new plants and the revamping of existing ones.

FACT commissioned a 50,000 TPA caprolactam plant in Kochi in 1990. The company also established a 900 TPD ammonia plant in 1994. This move aimed to replace the imported ammonia storage and handling facility at Willington Island (Cochin Port). The ammonia plant commenced operations in 1998.

As part of its core operations, Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited primarily engages in the manufacturing and marketing of fertilisers, and caprolactam. It also offers engineering consultancy and equipment fabrication services.

FACT Engineering Works (FEW) was founded on April 13, 1966, specialising in fabricating and installing equipment for fertiliser plants. Over time, FEW expanded its products to include fabricating pressure vessels, and heat exchangers, laying cross-country piping and installing large penstocks for hydel projects.

A separate fertiliser unit, the Cochin Division, was established in two stages at Ambalamedu near the BPCL-Kochi Refineries. phase I saw the commissioning of the ammonia urea Complex in 1973, while phase II, comprising the sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and complex fertiliser plant, was commissioned between 1976 and 1978. FACT expanded its capacity by inaugurating the petrochemical division at Udyogamandal in Kochi in 1990-91. This new division is focused on caprolactam production. This move marked FACT's diversification into the petrochemical industry at the time.

Installed capacity of FACT plants comprise Factamfos (NP 20:20) at 633,500 MT per annum, Ammonium Sulphate at 225,000 MT per annum and Caprolactam at 50,000 MT per annum.

Financial highlights

Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited's revenue from operations for the financial year 2023 stood at ₹6,198.14 crore, up 40% from ₹4,424.8 crore in the financial year 2021-22. The net profit for the financial year 2022-23 was ₹613 crore compared to ₹346.37 crore during the previous year. In FY23, the operating profit before working capital changes increased to ₹958.07 crore from the previous year's ₹610.7 crore. The company's earnings per share (EPS) stood at ₹9.47 in FY23 compared to ₹5.35 in the previous financial year.
