Dhampur Sugar Mills

Dhampur Sugar Mills Ltd is one of the leading integrated sugarcane processing companies. It is one of India’s most diversified sugar companies, producing sugar, ethanol, chemicals and co-generated power.

It was established in the year 1933 with a daily cane processing capability of 300 tonnes. In 1991, the company was among India’s first sugar companies to venture into chemical production, utilising the molasses byproduct from sugarcane processing to create a new business. Since then, Dhampur Sugar started producing ethyl acetate.

As on March 31, 2023, Dhampur Sugar possessed a daily cane processing capacity of 23,500 tonnes. Its distillery possessed a capacity of 350 KLPD (kilo litres per day), while the power generation capacity was 121 MW by the close of 2022-23.

In April 2021, Dhampur Sugar Mills Ltd was demerged into two companies to divide the assets to enable succession planning. The demerger resulted in Dhampur Sugar Mills Ltd owning and operating two integrated sugarcane crushing complexes in western Uttar Pradesh at Dhampur and Rajpura.

Business operations

Dhampur Sugar Mills produces sugar and utilises by-products bagasse and molasses in its distillery and co-generation segments.

Sugar: The company has an experience of over 9 decades in manufacturing sugar. The division accounted for 51.6% of its revenues in FY23. The two manufacturing units are strategically located in cane-rich regions of Uttar Pradesh. The Dhampur unit has a sugar production capacity of 15000 tonnes, while the Rajpur unit’s capacity stands at 8500 tonnes. The company sells white sugar under the brand name ‘Mishti’. The company also possesses a swing capacity to move from sugar to ethanol (from cane syrup) and vice versa to increase or moderate its market exposure.

Distillery: In 1995, Dhampur Sugar Mills launched its distillery operations. The company commenced molasses processing with a capacity of 100 KLPD (kilo litres per day), with its product mix comprising ethanol, SDS, extra neutral alcohol, and related products. Today, it is one of the biggest manufacturers of ethanol and by-products derived from sugarcane in India.

Co-generation: Dhampur Sugar Mills entered the power cogeneration business in 2007 to increase the utilisation of bagasse, a byproduct derived from sugar production. The company has since emerged as one of the largest power co-generators in the country, with a consolidated capacity of 121 megawatts.

Potable spirits business: In 2021, the company ventured into the business of producing countries. Dhampur Sugar Mills operates a tetra-pack line and three semi-automatic bottling lines.
