BSE Limited, earlier known as the Bombay Stock Exchange, is one of the oldest stock exchanges in the world. It was founded in 1875 by cotton merchant Premchand Roychand and was the first stock exchange in Asia.
BSE Ltd made its market debut in 2017 and became the first listed stock exchange in the country. As of December 14, 2023, the market capitalisation of BSE Ltd stood at over ₹31,800 crore. BSE Ltd shares have surged over 1030% in the last three years.
BSE had a humble beginning before becoming synonymous with Dalal Street. In the 1850s, five stock brokers met under a banyan tree near Mumbai Town Hall, situated where Horniman Circle stands today. A decade later, they relocated to the junction of Meadows Street and the then Esplanade Road, now named Mahatma Gandhi Road. As the number of brokers surged, they had to shift locations frequently. Finally, in 1874, they secured a permanent site. This group of brokers formalised into an official entity named The Native Share & Stock Brokers Association in 1875, which later became the Bombay Stock Exchange.
