Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar Limited (BHSL) is a sugar and ethanol manufacturing company, headquartered in Mumbai. Bajaj Sugar, initially known as Hindusthan Sugar Mills Limited, was founded by Jamnalal Bajaj on November 24, 1931.
Bajaj Sugar’s first plant was started in Gola Gokaran Nath within the Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh. Initially designed to process 400 tonnes of cane crushed per day (TCD), the plant’s capacity has since grown to the current 13,000 TCD.
The market capitalisation of Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar Limited is over ₹3,500 crore as of December 28, 2023. Bajaj Sugar share price has gained over 340% in three years.
Business operations
The company specialises in sugar manufacturing and is among India's top ethanol producers. It harnesses power from bagasse, a byproduct of its sugar mills, and also creates eco-friendly medium-density fibre boards and particle boards using this waste. Medium-density fibre boards and particle boards serve as excellent alternatives to wood in construction and furnishing, offering valuable sustainability.
Bajaj Sugar generates various by-products during its sugar production such as molasses, fly ash and press mud. With sugarcane crushing facilities and industrial alcohol distilleries spread across Uttar Pradesh, the company also operates co-generation power plants. These plants convert bagasse from sugar production into electricity, used internally to power their facilities. The surplus power is sold by the company to the state grid.
Bajaj Sugar has had many significant acquisitions over the years. In 1988, Hindusthan Sugar Mills Limited underwent a name change, rebranding itself as Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar Limited (BHSL). Two years later, the company integrated Sharda Sugar & Industries Limited.
The company went through a rapid phase of expansion in the 2000s. From 2003 to 2007, Bajaj Sugar established eight plants in UP. The company’s total cane crushing capacity after this phase of expansion stood at 96,000 TCD.
The company expanded its portfolio by acquiring Pratappur Sugar and Industries Limited (PSIL) in UP's Deoria district in 2005. Operating since 1903, PSIL was among Asia’s oldest plants, originally with a crushing capacity of 3,200 TCD. Following the acquisition, its capacity doubled to 6,000 TCD within a year. Pratappur Sugar was then renamed Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar and Industries Limited (BHSIL) and became a subsidiary of BHSL. The merger between BHSIL and BHSL was completed in 2010. Currently, BHSL impacts over 5,00,000 farmers in Uttar Pradesh alone.
Bajaj Sugar operates 14 sugar plants with a combined sugarcane crushing capacity of 136,000 TCD (tonnes crushed per day). It manages six distilleries capable of producing 800 kiloliters of Industrial Alcohol daily. Moreover, the company operates fourteen co-generation plants, boasting a collective power generation capacity of 449 MW.
Bajaj Sugar has many subsidiaries such as Bajaj Aviation Private Limited (BAPL) and Bajaj Power Generation Private Limited (BPGPL). In both these companies, Bajaj Sugar has a 100% holding. The company has two wholly-owned subsidiaries in Indonesia, PT Jangkar Prima and PT Batu Bumi Persada.
