Ashok Leyland is a leading multinational commercial vehicle maker. It manufactures buses, trucks, engines and defence vehicles. The company’s product portfolio includes exclusive models like double-decker buses, specifically designed for heavily populated routes.
The Chennai-headquartered company was established in 1948 as Ashok Motors. The company was initially engaged in assembling Austin cars. The name was changed shortly after automotive company British Leyland acquired a stake. This marked the beginning of Ashok Leyland's entry into manufacturing of commercial vehicles in India in 1955.
Ashok Leyland, the flagship of the Hinduja Group, is India’s second-largest commercial vehicle manufacturer and the world's fourth-largest bus manufacturer. It is also the 19th-largest truck manufacturer globally.

Ashok Leyland operates nine manufacturing plants and caters to markets across 50 countries. The international manufacturing sites include facilities in Ras Al Khaimah (UAE) and Leeds (United Kingdom).
In FY23, Ashok Leyland achieved a sales figure of 1,14,247 medium and heavy commercial vehicles in the domestic market. It included 10,767 buses and 1,03,480 trucks. In the light vehicle segment, the company recorded sales of 66,669 units.
Ashok Leyland also boasts the largest fleet of logistics vehicles in use by the Indian Army and maintains significant partnerships with armed forces worldwide.
In the commercial vehicle segment, Ashok Leyland possesses one of the most extensive and rapidly expanding networks, comprising 52,863 touch points. This includes 1,748 exclusive touch points and 11,207 outlets for Leyparts. Ensuring accessibility, the company has established service centres every 75 kilometres along major highways in India. This guarantees customer reach within 4 hours and vehicle restoration within 48 hours.
Ashok Leyland operates 12 driver training institutes across India, having trained over 18 lakh drivers since its inception. The company's service training institutes, in 12 locations across India, provide on-site training for technicians.
The company has many subsidiaries such as Albonair GmbH, Global TVS Bus Body Builders Limited and Hinduja Tech Limited. As of March 31, 2023, Ashok Leyland had 35 subsidiaries, 6 associates, and 3 joint ventures. Among these, Hinduja Leyland Finance Limited (HLFL) is a material unlisted subsidiary of the company.

Consolidated revenue for FY 2022-23 stood at ₹41,672.60 crore, up 58.8% year-on-year compared to ₹26,237.15 crore in FY 2021-22. Its profit after tax (PAT) in FY23 stood at ₹1,361.66 crore. EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) more than doubled to ₹2,931 crore in FY23 as against ₹995 crore in FY22. Earnings per share increased to ₹4.23 in FY23 from ₹1.22 in the preceding financial year.
